Hi, I am ready to have a meltdown! Quick history is DD(12) issued with a statement after private assessments for dyslexia, language disorder, Sensory/vestibular issues, Auditory processing (lowest 1%ile) visual stress, fine and gross motor difficulties, hand tremor.

She is now in yr8 MS and literacy and reading still not progressing. Recently had reading assessment and just scraped through to a level 4C (she was a level 3A in year 6). It is parents evening next week so I have made a longer appointment with literacy teacher. I feel as though I am going to loose it in the meeting as they are not doing what is on the statement to support DD in any subject:
DD not to copy from the board
teachers notes to be provided to DD to re read
to be encouraged to use iPad
TA to check and re cap knowledge at beginning of lessons
Access arrangements - scribe, reader, oral modifier, extra time, word processor, rest breaks.

These are not happening. I don't know how to get across to them that DD has now had statement for 2yrs and still we are asking for these things to happen. Emailed SENCO lot's who forwards my comments to staff. It may happen for one week and then stops.

One comment I don't know if I am right in saying, is that a QCA reading assessment where DD has to write she struggles and is still only achieving a low level 4. Whereas when she last did a reading comp test with SEN consultant she came out as a 14.3 age when she was 12.4. I am sure this is something to do with her not having to write. Is this a good argument as to why she is not using a scribe?
Can anyone think of a quick response regarding code of practice as I really do not want to have to sit there and explain the reasoning’s why DD needs this support? It’s on the statement for all to read, just not put in place. It makes me so mad and with all the GCSE news I am struggling as I feel I am letting DD down, how is she meant to progress at such a pace to be able to gain a good grade. She is a bright girl (level 6 in maths, science, music) just a huge barrier with literacy that is impacting other subjects now and DD’s low self esteem.

Any comments on how to proceed and behave myself at parents evening may come in handy. Thanks for reading.

Don't waste time using parents evening to discuss this in depth. Chances are the literacy teacher will just try and fob you off, or pat you on the head and 'reassure' you that they'll put the provsion in place, then she'll go away and forget all about it.

Write to the Head teacher, clearly stating they are failing in their duty to provide what is in her statement (list all the items). Copy in Senco. Don't do it face to face, much better to have in writing.

You don't have to go through it all again justifying why she needs this support - it is stated in her statement, and the school/LA are therefore legally obliged to provide it. It's not up to teachers/head/senco to decide whether or not dd needs this support - it is in black and white in the legally binding statement.

I went through this (at primary), then on advice from posters here, ended up writing to the SEN dept (actually, head of children's services) at the LA, reiterating that they are failing to put the provision in place. Copied in head teacher. The provision was arranged the following week.

Thanks bialystockandbloom. I am so tired of promises and then nothing ever happens. I wrote a letter to head last year and copied SENCO. I received a letter thanking me for my comments. For about 2 weeks a 'few' teachers made a little effort but then back to square one.

I feel horrible at the moment as I am always questioning DD on what support she has had and putting lots of pressure on her to use iPad and other methods. She must get fed up of hearing the same record! but she has not the confidence to be different in a class of 30 pupils.

I had similar problems in secondary trying to get the support in the statement ( different types of support!) I too wrote to the LEA as a complaint. I had to do it twice to get all the support in place.
The LEA assume everything is happening unless you tell them otherwise.
Its amazing what a little pressure from the LEA (when you have threatened JR unless they shape up) can do
