I tried to call back, but couldn't get through. The possibility of dyslexia was only bought up at parents evening a couple of weeks ago, and I wondered what sort of things she would be looking at - any ideas?

Also whether there were any questions I should be asking?

ThankyouSmile

She will run a reading test for fluency and a reading test for sight words. Then spelling. Then possibly, a phonic processing test called the CTOP test. This is quite good fun. She may use an online profiler such as The Dyslexia Portfolio. Be wary if they use the Lucid computer screener. Your senco, unless she has the BDA practsing Certificate cannot diagnose but any of these tests might show a literacy weakness. The latter, however, is not necessarily Dyslexia.

Thanks Flapping.

She talks about seeing 'sparkles'when she reads, and feeling sick when she looks at the page, as well as there being a disparity between her reading level and her writing/comprehension level (which is pretty advanced).

I asked about dyslexia last year, but they said she was too young to be tested and to wait and see.

Get thee to a behavioural optometrist (google one in your area). It sounds like she's got major visual interference and distortion.

ditto seeing a behavioural optometrist

and find out who is assessing dd and what their qualifications are with regard to dyslexia

Thankyou

I emailed a behavioural optometrist yesterday, there didn't seem to be any locally, so we would have to travel a fair way. He has just emailed back quoting £375 for a 4 hour assessment. Is this fairly standard?

He also talks of further therapy if needed, which would be difficult because of the distance.

Anyone know of a behavioural optometrist in the Wiltshire area?

Ian Jordan is in Edinburgh if you're willing to travel - he's an expert in the field.

Edinburgh, may be a bit far!

I have just spoken to the SENCO, she said the assessment she would be doing would be 2 sessions each one an hour long, involving reading, spelling, auditory and visual processing, and a long questionnaire for me to fill out about dd and family history. They are going to do it over the next 2 Mondays.

I have also seen that the lady that used to be the dyslexia expert at the local private college does a drop in surgery at the library tomorrow morning, so i will go along and ask for some advice re the optometrist.
