[[http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2487755/Seven-year-old-cerebral-palsy-stars-new-Boden-campaign--despite-unable-walk-talk.html Fantastic eh? Little boy with DS was in the M&S Christmas campaign last year too!)

am I allowed to laugh?

imho "Boden Mums" are the least tolerant of their pfb's sharing airspace with kids like ours, and the cause of many a special needs resource/funding being "diverted" to the school veggie patch lol!

Lovely that this little girl has got this chance but quite a sad reflection on things that it is newsworthy. Hopefully in years to come children with special needs will be a regular part of such campaigns to the point where it isn't noteworthy.

FuckyNell · 05/11/2013 17:32

Nice generalisation there bochead.

Icepilot · 05/11/2013 17:37

I think it's great. About 20 years ago kwikfit "whited out" a black man in their adverts. It's the march of progress. Change happening slowly but change all the same.

Hopefully people in 20 years will think its incredible it was ever newsworthy.

moondog · 05/11/2013 17:40

Change has to start somewhere.
Damned if they do and damned if they don't.
Bochead, I am a Boden mum. Grin
I am in Boden today, as are my children and my downstairs loo is bursting with Boden catalogues (note to self: get address off the bloody mailing list. Must be there about 4 times).

But we have met and I think you think I am ok (ish)

Wearing boden clothes does NOT in and of itself make you a "Boden Mum". Moondog, you just don't have what it takes to join their odious ranks.

Being a sterotypical "Boden Mum" requires a whole new mindset, one that is spectacularly lower middle class but social climbing and narrow.

The "Boden Mum" is usually to be found on AIBU bitterly resenting the presence of a SN child in a mainstream classroom or complaining to the head about the SN child having a TA/special cushion/insert other necessary resource. "Boden Mums" are the ones on the governors that help sneakily divert school funds away from SN to the veggie patch, or that tut at you as you drag your kid kicking and screaming into class 5 mins late, etc, etc.

They travel in nasty, spiteful little packs, and think the bedroom tax is a great idea. Independent thought is totally anethema to them. They are however possessed of a wonderful sense of entitlement regarding the use of that disabled parking bay you so desperately need.

Having been stereotyped so much myself over the years, I've retaliated. The caring carrot and the "Boden Mum" are my top two human caricatures when describing personality types I loathe in short hand. I'm now just waiting for the Catherine Tate sitcom.

No other group requires re-educating quite so urgently, (other than the muppets at Westminster). Hopefully over time, the drip drip of advertising like this will permeate the public mind and reduce some of the prejudice our kids face.

sneezecakesmum · 06/11/2013 11:03

Wow. And there was me thinking it was just an overpriced clothes catalogue. Shock

The little girl is cute regardless.

Bluebirdonmyshoulder · 06/11/2013 14:06

Whilst I also wear Boden I think I agree with bochead about 'Boden Mums'! And moondog, you may wear the clothes but thankfully you can't talk the talk!

Great news though, well done Boden. Positive change and let's hope it's not newsworthy much longer. Not least because bluechick is seriously gorgeous and an international modelling career so obviously awaits her! Grin

Aaah, that makes it all alright then.

Not sure what change it starts? Same philosophy as 'Children in Need' or MN campaign to change attitudes.

Lots of publicity for corporate and makes people feel all warm and cuddly, meanwhile disabled people continue to get a good kicking in real life.

And don't get me started on 'Boden mums'.
