Norwich?

We live in London and have a 9yo DS with AS. As much as I love living in London and have wonderful friends and sense of community where I live, we are renting and unable to buy anywhere, costs are going up ridiculously (our rent is dramatically higher than any of my friends' mortgage in the area) and we have no security- we can be turfed out anytime with only 2 months notice- not good for anyone, least of all when you have a child with autism. So we're considering moving out, even though I'm terrified at the thought of 'starting again'. We've started to think about Norwich. Can anyone tell me about whether there are secondaries there that are good at dealing with kids with autism? And what the support there is like generally for families with ASD? would love to hear any thoughts at all on the subject!

hope you don't mind but I'd like to follow this too.

We are likely to move to Norfolk sometime in the next couple of years and also have a child with ASD.

I did start a thread on the local board but no-one replied.

Hi to both of you.

I live in Norfolk (North) Both DC's travel to Norwich to school but I am fairly sure some secondary schools are quite accepting of ASD.
My 2 DD's with Downs went right through mainstream (a bit off topic)

I will ask around as have friends in various places in Norwich/Norfolk.

Norfolk is fantastic and housing is reasonable, we love it.

Thanks 2old, I'd be so interested to hear what you find out. I used to visit Norfolk a lot as a child and loved it. Although I imagine we'd aim for Norwich itself.
Leastaccomplished- perhaps we'll bump into each other in a couple of years if we both end up there! Smile

And another bump

I used to live in Norfolk - its quite a big county so depends I guess which part you want to settle to. one of the complaints we had was that the road infrastructure was rubbish so getting to places can take a lot of driving. I do know that their parent carer council there is very good so maybe contact them? there does seem to be quite a bit of support there. I know that Norwich college is very asd aware and even has a common room especially for asd kids and its won lots of awards etc. I would say do your research and pick the right area of Norfolk to live in but it certainly is a lovely county - we go on holiday there still every year

I live in Norwich and my son was diagnosed with ASD in the summer, but he's younger (coming up to 4yo). I don't know much about secondary schools but it is a lovely city and property is definitely a lot more affordable than London!

Both my husband and I need to travel to London for work from time to time, but I wouldn't want to commute daily (although I know some people do).

This probably isn't terribly helpful, but it'll keep the thread bumped & maybe someone with more useful information will be along soon.

Thanks bjk and nowhere!

Hi, I'm over the border in Suffolk but do know of children who cross the border for ASD specific schooling as there is no ASD specific school in Suffolk.
I don't know about secondaries in Norfolk but I know other support & provision is similar to us here in Suffolk which is good.

Thank you, every bit of information is useful
