Helping a friend find a suitable placement for her 14 year old ds HFA with eating disorder

Friend's ds has missed over 2 years of education due to an eating disorder and has had two admissions to hospital schools. He was discharged 6 months ago and has now been diagnosed with HFA.

He is currently receiving 1.5 hours of home tuition a day and feels ready to return to school. His mum is looking for a specialist placement but has already been turned down by a well known specialist group of schools.

Does anyone know of any schools that could manage a HFA child recovering from an eating disorder? He has a statement which she is appealing. I understand that the LA are looking to Health to jointly find an independent placement. Boarding is not out of the question.

Can anyone help?

Where abouts in the country are you , and what does the child want to do with his life following school . There are lots of new Utc school opening up that take children from 14 to 19 , so an older environment . Less messing as most kids want to be there and are working towards goals that they set for themselves to a degree. My child has recently moved to one after a few terrible years , with persistent bullying in his previous school . ( was also making him ill but not to same degree as this) the Utc have done assessment , he working extremely hard , is loving the environment , had no bullying what so ever , there fully aware of why he choice to leave other school , know that he has a difficult time with trusting other children , are takening these things slowly , encouraging him with his academic work to best of his ability , given feedback on how to improve in each subject .
I know there an untested as to results , most of them only been opened a year , others opening up . So might be worth a look see if there's anything around where you live that might suit your child.

Sorry- he's 14 and an able child academically. His difficulties stemmed from bullying too.

A Utc are university technical colleges , they come in various types , studio are computers , media , there a jcb one , on at silver stone , they all do different things . They study from nine till five , some have uniforms others don't . There opening up five in London area know one at elstree , which is looking at film , costumes , media etc .
The one my son at looks at sciences , is sponsored by university , another school , Health service, hospital & community and various drug companies.
They will all have different sponsors . Might be worth googling Utc and your area to see if anything around .

Let me know what you and he thinks of these concept for schools . Lots of people think its specialising very early in there lives .
They still do there gcse and sixth form a levels . They can do btech in subjects they specialise in . They also do placements with sponsor companies , or lab work as in my son case . Yr 10 don't go out as often as year twelves.

This will only work if he's in year nine at moment as they don't start till next year at this school so opening in 2014 . They only have intakes in year ten and twelve so if in year ten at moment will miss out . Which is a shame but depending on statement , you may be able to make it work , as will have missed a lot of schooling though sickness and could create a year retained statement for him to go there when opens . That's if he likes the concept of what there doing .
My child loves what there doing , is much happier . Working more independently than has previously . He's proud of himself and is happy to represent the school . It just sort of fell into place at right time for us . Sheer luck really . As we went to look around the week before they opened , got offered a place , no looking back since , was very worried that I had let him make a massive mistake as he was very well supported academically in last school , but was becoming a very withdrawn and occasional nasty young man . He now returned to the pleasant young man he was becoming before transferring to this previous school .
