I have been signing with ds since he was 10 months (he is 3-3), I have learnt from dvds, and something special, and sheets given to us by the SALT. The SALT arranged 2 courses for me to go on , both of which were cancelled.

So i have decided to buy the books to learn, but also to lend to his 1-1 at preschool (who has done one course).

Looking at the Makaton website, there are various sets, and i wondered whether it is best to buy all the core vocabulary ones, or the parent learning set. or whether there was something else altogether, which would be better.

Hi Hazey

Long time no speak! I would get the parent learning set but do persist with trying to get on a course as I found it brilliant in that I could ask for the specific signs we needed.

Also recommend Singing Hands either YouTube or buy their DVDs. They are ace and a great source of Christmas signs.

Hope all well with you. Here we're great. DS1 at school and loving it and now has a diagnosis of periventricular leukomalacia/cerebral palsy.

Should have added WEA normally run quite affordable Makaton courses.

We learned most of our makaton from watching Justin on something special on cbeebies. I was shocked at how much makaton resources are when I looked.

I bought the my choice app for the iPad was more useful for the pecs side as ds2 has never took to makaton but it did have videos for the words (the lady with the long hair). I have learnt most of the core through that.

Thankyou - thread had disappeared of threads I'm on so I didn't see your posts!

I will have a look at the my choice app, thankyou.

We watch a lot of Justin, and I have found it especially good for teaching my dd's signing to use with their brother.

Hello Hanbee! I wasn't sure whether the parent learning set was as comprehensive. Ds's SALT said that she thought that the first couple of courses would cover the signs that I already know. One of the things that attracted me to buying the books was that We always have them, so can kind of take the knowledge around with me, if that makes sense. We have a couple of the DVDs - singing hands ( ds is not a big fan! ) and Dave Benson Phillips ( who ds loves!) glad to hear that ds1 is enjoying school, we are at a very frustrating stage of getting a statement sorted cords, and hoping that he will start at a special learning unit attached to a ms primary, next September. I am glad that you finally got a diagnosis for your ds1, but that must have been a shock to hear. I have never heard of periventricular leukomalacia, I will go and have a google! Ds is still part ofa study into Kleefstra Syndrome, and the geneticist says that this is sofar the best match for him, but we are awaiting stuff from the DDD study. I have finally registered for SWAN UK so am back on there!

Because ds is completely non verbal, he relies entirely on signing, so the expense is less of an issue, because we had put aside some of his DLA for things like this. I just want to make sure we invest in the best resource.

Thanks again everyone.

Oh by the way anyone know the sign for dragon?!
