Global Delayed Development - Dyspraxia?

My friend's son (aged 6) is having a lot of behaviour problems at school, culminating in him being excluded for 2 weeks. A lot of people have mentioned to my friend about ADHD (diagnosis unconfirmed after seeing specialist), aspergers, dyspraxia, etc. She asked me to look at various websites to try and get some information for her - her son has seen (and is waiting another referall) to the local paediatric psychiatrist and she has funding (statement) for him. I looked at various websites and it seems that her son is not typically ADHD, aspergers, dyspraxic, etc. but after reading dyspraxiafoundation.org a lot of the pointers relate to my youngest daughter and I was wondering whether any of you had a child that had been diagnosed with dyspraxia and what you might think.

Background information:-

My nephew (brother's son) HAD oral dyspraxia (speech therapy from age 3 to 6) but he has now overcome this. My nephew (ex-husband's sister's son) had balance and co-ordination dyspraxia but he has now overcome this also.

My daugther is 2 years 4 months and has been diagnosed with global developmental delay.

She walked at 19 months, still doesn't talk and is generally about 9 months behind (according to the development clinic at my local hospital).

Looking at the dsypraxia website they have a few pointers which all relate to my daughter:-

  1. Not being able to sit unaided at 9 month (which is why she first got referred to the development clinic)

  2. Clumsy, bumping into things - she bumped her head in the same place on the same door frame 3 times in the space of about an hour

  3. Literality - left and right handed ness. My ex-husband is left handed and I am right and I put her literality down to this but it seems this is a "pointer" to dyspraxia.

My portage worker told me to mention all this next time I visit the development clinic (17th March) but I was wondering if any of you have children with dyspraxic and what other signs could point to this.

Thanks in anticipation.

Bumblelion, I think jimjams's ds1 has dyspraxia. I know I looked at it with dd because she has global development delay and has got some dyspraxic pointers but I dont think with her this is the root of her problems iykwim. I would just mention it when you have your appointment, Good Luck

s1 has some dysoraxia (very poor moor planning, very light grip, possible verbal dyspraxia) but to be honest its overshadowed by his autism, so I'm not too sure on a personal note what it looks like without autism.

A great book is "developmental dyspraxia" by madelaine portwood. That goes through dyspraxia at various ages- and she is the UK expert.

Oh and fish oils help!
