gluten free diet - good books

I'm looking for a good gluten free recipe book - only problem is recipes have to be dairy free and egg free too. Have put the Marilyn le Breton one in my Amazon basket - but not sure whether her recipes will be appropriate, or indeed whether book is worth buying. I suppose i'm only really looking for good bread/cake/scone /pastry recipes - most other things in DS2's diet are OK anyway. would be grateful for any ideas - or should I post this in allergies?

I've got that book sphil. You know it's not just a recipe book, it has loads of useful info too. Are you able to see a list of the recipes to help you decide wether to buy or not, because I'd be happy to give you a quick rundown.

Thanks Macwoozy. Could you just tell me whether many of the recipes contain eggs? It seems that a lot of gf bread/cake recipes do - like the one on the back of the Doves Farm gf flour packet.

You might want to look at Barbara's Kitchen:
www.apexcs.co.uk/barbara/news.htm
(sorry, still can't do links)
She provides recipes covering a wide range of food intolerances, and will do a recipe book based on specific needs. Don't know what she charges though, but worth a look if there are several issues.

She's recommended in the Marilyn Le Breton book and her GFCF bread is fantastic!

Thanks Karen - I've just found this site and was wondering whether it was worth it - she charges £34 for a 'starter kit' which includes all ingredients for gf/cf bread + measuring spoons/cups + your own personalised recipe book. Think I might splash out - the problem with lots of the other gf stuff i've found it that it's rarely egg and milk free as well.

I've got Healthy Gluten-Free Eating by Darina Allen and Rosemary Kearney and it's got lots of yummy stuff in it like muffins, tarts, pasta and lots of deserts. I've also got a book by Rita Greer that is total rubbish.

Chandra · 03/07/2006 00:26

here , this is also dairy and egg free and oriented to families.

macwoozy · 03/07/2006 10:29

Had a look and it seems that alot of the cake/bread recipes include eggs. There are two bread recipes without eggs - soda and microwave white bread, and two types of cookies, ginger and vanilla/almond. Just let me know if you want me to type out any of those recipes for you.

sphil · 03/07/2006 21:54

Macwoozy - if you've got time I'd love the two bread recipes. Thanks

Chandra - I've just looked at this and think it may be of more use than the Le Breton book. Am sending DH off to the library tomorrow to see if they have it - can't help thinking that it's a waste to buy recipe books as there are so many foods DS2 won't eat.

Let me know how it turns out

Microwave white bread
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups of gf four mix
1 1/2 tsps xanthan gum
1 sachet ( or 2 1/4 tsps) gf dried yeast
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
9 fl oz warm water
1 tbsp sunflower oil

.Comine together the flour, xanthan gum, yeast and salt

. Mix in water an doil to form a batter
.Pour into 1 litre microwaveable conatiner
.Allow mix to stand for 25 minutes in a warm place, to rise.
.Cook at full power for 8 minutes
.Allow to stand for 5 minutes.
.Turn the bread out of container and place in oven at gas mark 7 for 5 mins to brown and crisp the outside

I'll do the other one tommorrow.

Don't worry about egg on bread and cake recipes, you can use bananas and a bit of orange juice in place of the eggs (for the cakes). And good old "Orgran No Egg" would serve for anything where eggs are required (no scrambled eggs though!) you can get it from health shops.

AS for cooking without dairy, we use rice milk/ Tiger white, although you can cook with soya milk as well. Is not the same result but at least...it's a result !

Best of luck

sphil - if you like, I've got a now redundant g-free cookbook. Ds1 grew out of his gluten allergy. I was actually looking at it on the shelf wondering what to do with it. If you want it I can send it to you - just pay the P&P. CAT me if you are interested. I'm at work now but will get the details at home tonight.

sphil · 05/07/2006 22:24

I have CAT-ed you Smoggie - thanks a lot. Also thanks to Macwoozy and Chandra. I now have 4 different bread recipes to try: microwave white, soda, Doves Farm with egg replacer and a bread mix I found at Waitrose today. Will have a bakefest tomorrow and let the Sphil family taste test. Will report back!

Well not a good start. Did the recipe on the back of the Doves Farm bread flour packet using egg replacer and following instructions to the letter. Have created a brick with a pale doughy top .
