Any experience with babies and EEGs?

I like to be prepared as hospitals make me v anxious!

Ds (7 months)is having an EEG in a couple of weeks as he's having absences. We are aware it might not show anything due to age/type of brain damage.

Ive had one in the past and know roughly the theory but I'd just like to know how they manage to keep wires on/does he have to lie still etc.

They'll see if he'll go to sleep first, you'll be holding him and will feed him first. If he won't go to sleep then they'll give him some melatonin which works a treat. shame it's not available in Boots!!

Good luck, hope you manage to get some answers.

Hi there

My DD has had a few EEGs. The first when she was about 14 months old. She has epilepsy. They have done both sleep and awake ones. Obviously she needed to be asleep for the sleep one! But we just made sure she was tired when she went in.

Yes - they needed to fix wires (with a sticky stuff) to her head. I think they measured the head first and then marked where the wires needed to go.

To be honest she was fine with the early ones. They have been more stressful as she's got older and doesnt like sitting around while the wires are stuck on and then taken off (her hair is longish and curly so a bit painful/time consuming).

I think the whole process took about an hour an a half. Maybe 20 mins of the actual EEG recording.

They did not tell us anything there and then. We had to go back for an appointment with our consultant.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks. He's desperate trying to be mobile plus will sleep on the way there as we've got an hours drive to get there so doubt he will sleep.

He had menigitis when he was tiny and this is possibly brain damage from it rather than born with epilepsy. Paeds not confident anything will show due to type/age/possibly not seizures.

Hate this not knowing.

Don't know whether this is helpful but DS also had meningitis at 8 months. Sadly left him deafblind CP and epilepsy. He has had several EEG's he has never been sedated but all body movements were recorded by the technician.
It was not too stressful so good luck to you both

DD had one at 6 months where we had to get both awake and asleep asit was the transitioning to a deeper sleep which was concerning her neurologist. She had brain damage at birth. I fed her and she slept rather than sedation as we needed to see her normal sleep patern IYSWIM

It was very calm and the technician kind, they couldn't tell us anything at the time but we did have a follow up phone call a few days later.

DGS had one at 6 months also for absences and he was awake. He was perfectly OK throughout and it wasnt distressing for him. He had very little hair so that was another good thing!

Thanks everyone.
