When applying for a state secondary online, do they ask if your dc has any SEN? Am wondering as would the school you put as 1st choice know this before you are offered a place, therefore influencing whether they want your dc to go there or not .... ?

when i was picking for my ds it was on paper, none of this online stuff :-) however children with SEN get priority, so for you to not get your 1st or 2nd choice then they would have to have some serious reasons, if the child is clearly only really going to have their needs met at a special or indi school then the school could state they cant meet the needs for xxx reason and they were reasonable reasons, not things like "we have too many already", as even that can be argued against if you can show that in previous years the school have admitted above the advertised intake and you can set out why that particular school is best for that child.

Ms DS current school were all "Yes we support, we do whatever on the statement, all nice and sweet, only to be the school from hell, so the reactions from the senco, etc...isnt always a good indicator, with that said i've had teachers/senco show their ignorance and discrimination within 5 mins of meeting them, so naturally I walked out the door never to return.

Polter: but Acadamies and faith schools have their own "rules" my little one initially got into a faith school that was ultimately decided by the school/church as to who was admitted.

So I think it would depend if OP is looking at an academy, faith school, or standard LA school, im still getting my head around academies, so apologies if I am wrong about them and the LA

Polter: I assumed OP DC was statemented (oops)

Little one is only 5 and I had to fill in a supplementary form from priest, etc, as the faith schools also have their own criteria, and will not even entertain you if you do not fill this in. This was only last year so I don't believe the rules have changed since, but thankfully the local non faith school offered him a place so he was only at the faith school for 2 weeks

My nephews are 7, they too attend faith schools and again, it was the school that ultimately picked the children. i cant speak for church of england but certainly with the catholic schools they pick, then they let the LA know.

My big DS school still "select" their kids and have the supplementary form, need to give blood, and a donation of a donkey and gold, etc..
