HI there

i Just wanted to ask,...my son who is 10, has sensory processing disorder, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Auditory & visual processing disorder, sequential & working memory difficulties, gaps in phonological knowledge, lack of social skills, and very immature!

Now i requested my LA to asses him, but they turned me down, because he doesn't meet the criteria, to be assessed!..he is working at level 2, of the national cirriculum, with alot of 1-2-1 support, including wave 3, 1-1 multisensory program. acceleread/accelewrite, and infact his Junior school have gone above the call of duty, in providing support for him!, but he would have to be working at level p or 1, before the LA would consider assessing him!
My concerns are that he will not cope in mainstream secondary school, and after a meeting with the SENco at his catchment area mainstream secondary school,..they have said they cannot give him, what he has been used to, all his educational life!
He is school action plus
Does anyone else have a Statement of educational needs, for there child, even though they are working at or above the level, needed for an assesment???

Thank you

Btw, i am appealing, taking it to Tribunal!

Thanks

What utter rubbish your LA are spouting.

Good luck for the tribunal Smile

There is no level children need to be below, there are plenty of children working at or above the average level for their age who have statements.

With auditory memory problems no Orton-Gillingham approach will work. He needs to have one to one tutoring with a speech and language therapist who is specialised in LiSP (Lindamood-Bell program) ...

PLEASE start the Statementing process NOW!

Once he has had this tutoring, he'll be ready for multi-sensory teaching methods ...

Bog standard initial refusal. DS1 had two refusals in year 6, failed transition to secondary, LA tutoring at home, tribunal and is now placed at Indi ss (Frewen).

Following the first refusal there was agreement that rate of progress (measured using standardised reading and spelling tests) during a wave 3 intervention. Progress of less than 6 months per academic year meets the criteria for assessment. Get a copy of your LA policy to see exactly what the criteria are.

DS1 got 2b, 2a and 3 at KS1 but was still level 3 at KS2. LA EP claimed he needed to be no higher than 1b. It's all nonsense.

Thank you for your replies,.very pleasing to hear.
Even Ds junior school, Headteacher, SENco, and EP, are all saying
"he doesnt meet the criteria"
I am Appealing, and have Corum Childrens Legal Center, Hopefully compiling my case!

Thanks

Ask them to put in writing what their 'criteria' is.
Plenty of us on here have been told that we wouldn't get a statement because 'needs aren't great enough'. I was told the same but ds has full time support at an indi school as he cannot cope in mainstream.

They spout that rubbish as a try on in the hope that some parents believe it and give up trying to get support. It's all part of the 'game'.

They'll probably back down when you get to appeal but would have avoided giving any provision in the meantime.

Good luck.
