Frustrated!

Today I spoke with one of the 'nuture' staff at my DD's school (9 poss. AS) about what support is in place for her as she was upset the previous day after a noisy afternoon in class. I suggested that perhaps she could go somewhere quieter to do her work in the afternoons as the class is more unstructured and the noise levels tend to rise. I asked if there was anything in writing to ensure everyone is aware of her 'difficulties' and that she may need extra support. Especially as she is very quiet and not likely to speak up if there's a problem, she would just put up with it then be upset with me at the end of the day.
The staff member said that as her issues have only recently come to light (in the last 8 months or so) that perhaps once she gets a diagnosis the 'ball will start rolling' for support for her. I said that she is the same child now before diagnosis, with the same problems, so what's the difference with her having an official 'label'? Nothing will change, she's not going to suddenly become more 'autistic'! Grrrr! Just frustrates me! In the mean time does she just have to struggle on?
Nuture teacher going to speak to CT and SENCo, I don't hold out much hope!
I think they'll be sick of me up the school if this doesn't get sorted sharpish!

Put in writing that you have spoken to this person and they said x, but you are confused as you understood that support was based on need rather than diagnosis and can they clarify this for you IN WRITING so you can be certain you have understood correctly.

Update:
DD has told me today that the nurture teacher brought an IEP in to the class and they read it through together, I'm pleased that me talking to the teacher yesterday has had some result. I just have to go in and check it through myself now.

Good for you. You probably don't know this but support at school should not be provided in response to any particular diagnosis but should be based on identifying a child'sactual SENs and assessing what support that child needs. That's the guidance that the Dep for Ed expects schools to work to.

So you obviously and possibly inadvertently know more about this than member of the nuture team does - which doesn't actually surprise me as most school staff are pretty unaware when it comes to SEN support.

You should also have been involved in the drawing up of the IEP. It should set SMART tartgets that are specific, measurable, achievable/accurate, realistic and timely. That's something to check tomorrow.

I wouldn't leave it to the nuture teacher to talk to the SENCO - I'd talk to the SENCO directly. It's your right to do so instead of having a conversation repaeted to you at arm's length.
