Just wanted to share with you that we took Lottie to see a surgeon yesterday, just to have her have a quick look over her and see if she could findany reason that Lottie is so anti-standing. It was good news in the fact that she confirmed what I thought and didn't find any additional problems.

Basically even if Lottie didn't have DS she would be a late walker as she is a bottom shuffler not a crawler which delays her walking anyway. That coupled with the fact that she is incredibly flexible, has DS so has low muscle tone, is very content to sit and observe rather than a go-getter, and is also strong willed in the fact that she just doesn't want to stand / walk yet, all mean that she will get there, just in her own time.

That's what I thought but nice to have that confirmed by a surgeon not linked to my local hospital etc.

Just makes me love her even more iykwim!! I love the fact that she just doesn't want to yet and will do it when SHE is good and ready! It makes me laugh really! My back tells another story, but I think she's fab!!!!

Excellent news that there's nothing wrong, Thomcat. Lottie will do it when you least expect it, no doubt!

RexandBen · 17/02/2004 13:50

Awwwwww!!!!!!

That's great news!!

Blu · 17/02/2004 13:53

That's Our Girl! Sit it out, Lottie.

TC.

MABS · 17/02/2004 15:14

I agree with Lottie - Walking is very over rated !!! My ds def agrees with her.

coppertop · 17/02/2004 17:20

That's such good news. Keep on shuffling, Lottie!

fio2 · 17/02/2004 17:26

Thomcat.....my dd was a bottom shuffler, she walked at about 19 months....my back has never been the same since. When they shuffle they can play and get about so they are content to do just that.......a crawler can't crawl and carry a toy at the same time IFYSWIM so they are more inclined to stand. She'll walk when she's ready .........and then you'll be wishing she wasn't

Thomcat · 17/02/2004 17:49

Luckymum - I may well end up cursing the day she does walk and I have to run around following her, but I really don't think so! I've had it easy for too long to mind that! Well easy apart from dire lower back pain every day! I'm more likely to regret the day she walks becasue her dad and I said we'd get married when she's walking!!!!!

Good news, bless her! Sorry about your back, though TC xx

eidsvold · 17/02/2004 19:00

that is good to hear ... now I can relate it to dd - she is a commando crawler ... and at 18 months shows no sign of wanting to walk although she likes standing but again needs help with that. Thanks to your good news - I am not going to worry so much about dd. Just a question - when you are doing standing exercises with her - does she lock her knees?

Just curious what does Lottie weigh now?!?! Is she tiny like dd - who is 10.3 kgs at almost 19 months old?!?!?!!

eidsvold · 17/02/2004 19:32

oh yes TC I'd forgotten about the proposal - maybe she is waiting for summer and a gorgeous little dress and sandals

Thomcat · 18/02/2004 09:45

Hi Edisvold - yes Lottie is a tiny tot. I don't know what she weighs to be honest, it's been ages since we had her weighed properly. We sat her on the bathroom scales at home a month or so ago and she seemed to be about 2 stone. She is a diddy little doll though. When I pick up other kids her age and younger they feel SO much heavier and ..... sturdy.
Anyway, no worries, it makes having to carry her everywhere easier!

She does seem to lock her knees when she is standing against the bath for example. I think that's because she is so unstable in her hips etc that it's the only thing she can do to stop her from moving around too much in the middle.

It IS good to know that bottom shufflers are late walkers and it's just one of those things and glad you feel more reassured as well

What a relief for you ds was a very adept bottom shuffler and lateish walker. I used to love watching him.

It is nice to get good news on here

lou33 · 18/02/2004 14:18

Good news TC

2under2 · 20/02/2004 16:08

good news then, TC I also agree with mabs - walking is indeed overrated. My dd with DS started walking at 2.5 yrs old - she's still really accident-prone (at nearly 3 yrs old) and trips over everything. Nightmare!

aloha · 20/02/2004 16:20

Good news - and I'll tell my friend with a late walking bottom shuffler what your specialist told you! I think she sounds like my ds - cheefully lazy He still likes to be carried and he's HEAVY.
