My teen with AS does this a lot and it really worries me. She does it when out and about and even with constant reminders finds it very hard to stop. It is the one thing stopping her from leading an independent life and I am very reluctant to let her out on her own as it makes her extremely vunerable and a target. If she didn't do it I would be far happier letting her do more. Does anyone have any suggestions or strategies that have worked for them? I would really appreciate any help or advice.

Unfortunately she really finds it hard and doesn't seem to be able to control it very well. Even though she tries so hard to stop it she says she just can't? I will look into the sensory and ask one of the ot's at her school what they think. thank you!

Hi! My DS1 (9, AS) has just been part of a Cambridge study looking at self speech v inner speech in HFA/AS.

He had to read a social story about how people talk to themselves in their heads. He then watched a you-tube clip about a similar aged little boy dividing something he had to do into 3-5 tasks and talking himself through it. He had a few weeks' break to practice doing this. In the next you-tube clip the boy whispered the tasks to himself (another few weeks to practice) and in the last, the boy would say the tasks silently in his head.

My DS partly got it, and I do think it's helped a bit - might be worth a try?

Wild - that sounds interesting. I wonder if I could contact someone or if there was anyway I could get hold of the clip? I do think it would really help!!! Thank you.

wild that sounds very interesting.

My DS (9) also talks to himself, out loud and especially when talking himself through tasks.
