DD2 went back to school today. First time having packed lunches. She told me that she didn't sit next to anyone at lunch time because she couldn't find friend x, but then saw friend x and moved over.

I was trying to establish why she couldn't find x. The conversation went as follows Grin:

Me: Ok, so why couldn't you find x?
DD2: I couldn't see her.
Me: X has packed lunches too?
DD2: Yes.
Me: So why weren't you together?
DD2:
Me: Tell me what happens when you get your lunches.
DD2: We get the lunch trolley and take it to where the green and red are.
Me: What green and red??
DD2: You know, the green and red that the lunch lady needs to know if you have
Me: Ooooh, you mean the wrist band that the people who have hot lunches wear?
DD2: Yes
Me: But you have packed lunches now Confused Ok. Don't worry. So you bring the lunch trolley round. Then what? How do you know you can get your lunch box?
DD2: Mrs D says we can.
Me: So how do you get your lunch box? What happens? Do you get called by your groups, or just get them?
DD2:Well. You stand in the queue just normally like this Then, if it is on the top shelf, you just reach out like this Or if it's in the middle shelf, you have to bend down a bit like this Or if it's at the bottom, you have to bend right down like this

GrinGrin

Me: Sorry, DD2, I wasn't clear. I know how you can get a lunch box off a shelf. I'm trying to work out why you were separated from X. Can you wait by the lunch boxes or do you have to walk straight onto the field?
DD2: Straight onto the field, of course!
Me: Right. Can you think of a place where you could wait for X and then in the morning say to her, nice and boldly "X, could we eat lunch together today? We could meet at the blue door, or the green team gate, etc.
DD2: Mummy We, the year 2, year 1, year R are only allowed on this end of the field. The older children like year 6 and yooouuuuu would be allowed on the other end. It.Is.Very.Crowded!!
Me: But couldn't you think of a quiet spot.
DD2: It.Is.Very.Very.Crow.Ded.
Me: Ok, DD2. Get ready for bed.

Brilliant Grin

I think your DD2 needs to meet my DS. They could have conversations like this together for hours to give you and I a break!

I love reading about your dds conversations, always make me laugh

lougle · 04/09/2013 22:25

Grin I just wonder how much her teachers listen to her. It's unreal that they don't pick up on it, surely Confused

Thats brilliant! but I agree it does rather defy belief that her teachers havent noticed.....

I can imagine dd2 doing something simillar to the 'acting getting a lunch box of a shelf' all the while looking at me like I am a complete idiot.... Although she is actually improving ALOT with LFT, we get a lot less of the 'lost in minutiae' moments now.

mind you I was asking ds last night 'can you remember your dance teachers name?' and DD2 pipes up 'her do called Sarah' Confused , I have hope though because that kind of mangling is now basically gone in her first language....

I know this thread is lighthearted but on a serious note I would seriously wonder how much the teachers listen to DD2. DS is the same with explanations of what happened including everyones positions etc and their refusal/ lack of time to let him get through this to the point has resulted in unnecessary meltdowns and situations where he's got into trouble because they've decided its easier just to stop him and take the tale tellers version of events as gospel.

So true.

I want to say that she is just gorgeous and cute (Well because she is), but I know that won't cut it when she's a teenager.

Are you keeping a log of these conversations?

lougle · 05/09/2013 22:05

She is just gorgeous and cute. Thank you for saying it, Star Flowers

MN is my log - I bore you all to tears recounting our conversations, then there they are Wink

Today, she came in from the garden, following DD1 who was crying profusely.

She announced 'I did hit her for a very.good.reason!' Poor DD1 had a clearly defined DD2-sized hand mark on her back.

The crime? She had laughed when DD2 fell off her bike.

The accounts are not boring at all. In fact the are very illustrative and help me think about my own language use and things that I need to ensure DS 'gets'.
