Me again! My son has been referred for an ASD assesmeent after seeing a psychologist . he's getting on OK in school so they tell me . I was told they would start a visual timetable with him and an IEP (?) None of this has followed through (since April)

My question is what should be in place and is he entitled to an IEP and should they have introduced me to a SENCO?

I am going to meet with them over different issues . I feel they aren't understanding him properly over various things I've spoken about .

They don't see all the little things he does, I've seen him do it in school for myself .

So I need things I'm aloud and should be doing for him to mention to the teacher ?

I feel they have just ignored us =(

IEP should have been done in April, no reason to wait. Visual timetable again a week to two weeks depending on how they do it.
If its just his timetable then no reason for it not to be quick, then giving him time to learn that he can refer to it and staff remembering to update it. This should be done within a week. If they are going to go the whole hog and picture labelling everything in the classroom ie; where the paints are kept then 2wks.

Once the school were aware of his referral he should have been added to the SEN register internally within the school. As for the SENCO they should have made contact with you to arrange meeting, as it is they who do the IEP and in effect manage how he is educated in school. The SENCO should have spent time observing your ds and maybe done some assessments with him, with a view to identifying areas of concern where he will need support and his strengths.

All of this will be in readiness of the assessment team asking the school for their input and allowing you and them to decide whether he needs a statement of special educational needs.

I assume your meeting is with the CT, I would cancel this and request a meeting with CT, HT and SENCO, once you have the meeting in place, send them a list of things you will be discussing. Thus making sure you have all these people in the one place. Make notes during the meeting (always makes them sit up) confirm time frames and follow up with a confirmation email of what was agreed. This starts your paper trail and means that any future failures will be documented.

Lastly don't be afraid, this can all be unnerving but you are his biggest advocate - good luck

Also this is his right, education is not a privilege

How old is your son now?.

Is this a state school or a private school?. Regardless they have let you and your son down.

There should already be an IEP in place and he should also be on School Action Plus. Infact as the school have done nothing I would seriously consider applying for a Statement of special needs from the LEA.

Use IPSEA's website and contact them as well www.ipsea.org.uk

My son school really dragged their feet doing a senco assessment and iep, I was given dates and came and went. I wrote a strong letter to the head and volia! I had the iep the next day.

ifyourhappy - I just want to say good luck. I am in a similar situation myself at the moment. My ds was diagnosed a few weeks ago so I am trying to find out what I should be asking his school to do because they appear to be doing nothing.
