Can anyone recommend any books on puberty (and beyond) for DS who will be 12 next month? He is off to secondary, and is naive beyond words, despite knowing the mechanics of everything, if you get my drift.......

Thanks

DS2 is about to go into Y7 and we have just given him a copy of Freaks, Geeks & AS:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1843100983

It's about social relationships generally rather than specifically about romantic relationships, but still useful.

My son is very prudish. I thoroughly recommend this one for early not-very-technical info about sperm meets egg and names of bits and pieces:

www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Babies-Families-Friends/dp/1406306061

then a development for older children is this one in the same series which goes a bit more into the mechanics of sex:

www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-About-Where-Babies/dp/1844281736

in terms of puberty I have been impressed by this one for my DS, I felt he didn't need to know too much about female puberty just yet, didn't want to freak him out totally, so I started with this one which is just for boys and will add female puberty in the fullness of time:

books.google.co.uk/books/about/On_Your_Mark_Get_Set_Grow.html?id=iLF8Q7Y_Y1QC&redir_esc=y

It has lots of 'is this normal?' type questions and is quite forthright but as my DS would never dream of asking anyone about anything that was worrying him, I think this is the right balance of forthright and honest without being excessively graphic.

I second the recommendation of the Let's Talk series. We have used these with all four of our children.

There's a third book in the series called Let's Talk About Sex, suitable for older pre-teens & teenagers.

ilikemysleep · 20/08/2013 22:40

yes I have the 'lets talk about sex' but having read it it is stored away until Ds is a bit older, a bit too much for him yet!

ThreeBeeOneGee · 20/08/2013 22:52

Yes, the last book is quite detailed... Smile

Thanks everyone!
