Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Those of you with two or more children on the spectrum has your second or subsequent child been given a different level of diagnosis to the first?

Please I hope I haven't offended anyone with this but I am genuinely curious due to my own situation .As many of you prob know I have three dcs dd1 is 14 and nt my ds is 8 and has a diagnosis of hfa and my dd2 who is almost 4 has a diagnosis of autism and is going to ss which many of you on here have supported me over. My question is this on here and in rl I have noticed that the second child is more likely to be diagnosed with autism rather than aspergers or hfa . I'm emphaticly not saying these conditions are not severe and disabling I see my son struggle every day but I am wondering why it is thank you if you've read this far!

I have two dc with ASD. Ds 1 aged 12 is very severely autistic and fits most of the classic characteristics. Dd aged 8 is also autistic to a significant degree though is more cognitively able, more sociable and less rigid than ds. They both have severe issues with communication and speech.

Both their diagnoses simply said "autism" though DS1's initially said "with associated hyperactivity". Our paed doesn't think it's helpful to include qualifiers such as "high functioning" as they're fairly meaningless.

I have two boys - the 6 year old's diagnosis purely ASD though high-functioning and the second 4 years old also diagnosed ASD with associated hyperactivity and poss Aspergers but too young to tell as still v. young.

It was also mentioned by the Paediatrician that they are steering away from using added words such as 'high-functioning' and 'Aspergers' as it can give permission to people to assume this means they require less help.

Hi,
I have a dd 9 diagnosed with aspergers and dyspraxia. I have a ds 5 diagnosed with SLI dyspraxia and autism. He is presenting with more difficulties than dd did at the same age.

Thanks for all your replies I find it really interesting dd2 has far more difficulties than ds

DS1 was Dx with 'subtle' AS
DS2 was Dx with Autism, although in some areas, high functioning.
