Melatonin

Hi my son is 6, ASD. This is the first year we have had sleep problems with him. Until late last year he always went to bed around 8 and slept a good 11/12 hours. This seems to have gone out the window and has been worse during the summer. Went through a really grim patch in May when he wasn't falling asleep til gone midnight. Not distressed, just getting up, wandering about, getting back into bed. During the summer hols it has been about 11, occasionally later and I have been getting him up about 8am. I have noticed the last week or so he's a bit more settled and sleepy in the evenings, hoping this is to do with the nights drawing in but he is still averaging 11 o clock before he falls asleep. I am finding it exhausting having no break in the evening from him, though he's not a bad boy but just quite noisy, my whole evening is taken up with making sure he's okay. Is this likely to be ongoing or will the winter months make a difference? What circumstances are melatonin prescribed and does it actually make a difference? I would be happy if he was asleep by 9 every evening. He was in ms school and is starting special school September where I think (hoping and praying) he is going to be more settled and happy.

Thanks I think I'm going to give it til half term and see if school and shorter days make a difference. I know we're lucky in many ways, once he's asleep he stays that way, but it's still a bit of a shock to the system and makes me horribly tired and snappy!
