we have last assessment with salt tomorrow as part of SA. So far she has said dd has problems with clarity, memory, grammar but understanding seems ok.
she has said that she doesnt think s+l therapy would be beneficial as she feels dds speech clarity is part of gdd, but she has strategies she will recommend for school.
can a salt recommend any 1:1 ?
also any advice would be greatly recieved,

thanks for your reply. salt has said dds speech seems consistent with the rest of her development and therefore therapy wont help Sad

im really confused now, all professionals are saying different things!
EP has assessed and recommended social skills group, no need for 1:1.
OT have assessed and recommended 1:1 with pead backing.
salt saying dd definitely has difficulties but no therapy needed Sad

I suspect SLT are advising on basis of what the service provides (no 1:1, only advice to schools - thats the service model here), not what is needed. They are most likely writing the report to the provision they are prepared to offer not to need.
Sadly this is very common.
If 1:1 is recommended it will be a school teaching assistant who will carry out SLT exercises.
Its nonsense to say therapy won't help, everything you do for a child, especially one with delays, will make a difference.
What they mean is either does not meet the criteria for therapy or they dont offer therapy.
You should ask for their eligibility policy and to set out out the levels of provision they offer.

they do offer 1:1 therapy though, as dd has had it in the past, although they discharged twice as she got anxious.
Also before they discharged they said she was making encouraging progress, so therapy was beneficial.
however when left with no provision dds speech declined again Sad and as salt in this area only offer 6 weeks of therapy thats why they are saying it wont be beneficial, as progress will be slow and dd will need long term therapy.
they wont admit this though, what can I do about it?
sorry for typos im on my phone.

Not being able to walk is a part of having a broken leg, so crutches won't help you get around right?

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/08/2013 14:18

I asked for the criteria and the model they used to decide what services ds should receive from SALT.

One of the biggest weighted categories was the anxiety of the parent. wtf?

Therefore, I assume that should they assess you as highly anxious about your child's level of need, demonstrated I suspect through being fairly demanding, then you get more crap provision.

I don't get this.
If a service makes no difference to a kid, why is it publically funded?
It also follows logically that there must be some services which do make a difference to some kids, so I would, out of sheer curiosity ask for who the service does make a difference to and what the measurable outcomes are. I would use o Freedom of Information request.

Why are we publically funding services which have no measurable outcomes?

update - after a very lengthy chat with salt this afternoon she has finally agreed to recommend therapy for dds statement Smile
thankyou for all of the great advice!
when I asked her if she would also be recommending any 1:1 within the classroom to implement the other strategies she has recomended, she replied ' no one gets 1:1 anymore, the lea dont have any money'.

Children with ASD do not benefit from SALT according to my last LA. I took them to tribunal. After a year of crap SALT they claimed he had made do much progress with his SALT he no longer needed it.

Tribunal no. 2 got him placed in a SALT school.

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/08/2013 16:19

No-one gets 1:1 may well be what she's told but her job is to make recommendations based on need not what other people do or don't get or how much money the LA have.

I think this FOI response from Herts makes very interesting reading

www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/speech_and_language_reports_2
Please can you specify the guidance, policies or advice that is
used when wording the recommendations that are made in Speech and
Language reports for Statutory Assessments of Special Educational
Needs,(SEN) advice for the content of Statements of SEN and reports
for Annual reviews of Statements of SEN.

'who all assume someone else is the main source of help'

So true.

'Do yourself a favour and teach yourself to do what's necessary'

Also true.
I think most public sector helping agencies are buckling under the weight of their internal Byzantine illogical admin and referral systems and will shortly implode.
Having faith in them is at best naïve and at worst, hopelessly deluded.

It's irrelevant the council has no money. Thankfully a previous govt passed an Education Act which says all children must get an appropriate education which meets every one of their special educational needs. Courts have upheld lack of funds is no excuse the statutory duty has to be met. Councils have to fund statutory duties first and then use what is left to fund anything discretionary. So unless your council has shut every library and swimming pool and everything else they have no duty to provide then they do have money otherwise why are they still spending it on discretionary items?

BigBird69 · 14/08/2013 12:47

It is written into my sons statement that he should receive 1/1 on a 3 times weekly basis. However they word it in such a way that it is to be delivered by an "appropriately trained" person and "overseen by salt "
