My youngest DS has some speech issues, the school acknowledged this was the case however did nowt about it other than write an IEP put him on school action and not follow it or update it.

I went off to get evidence that things were not quite right with DS after they said if I get the evidence with strategies and recommendations they would put in, following the assessment which was by ICAN they then refused to accept the recommendations and discussed it without my consent with the link SLT who then went on to advise the school ( without seeing my DS) as to what they should be concentrating on based on the ICAN report, what she suggested and what the assessment recommends are 2 different things.

After a few more months of battling with the school as all I was trying to do was get the school to refer him with their blessing as one can't deny his speech sound issues and the teacher has acknowledged that his speech does present with some difficulties.

The school send me my bit to fill in and I return to them to fill in their bit where they are supposed to explain why they are making the referral etc...what they decide to do is omit their part and send it off to the SLT dept to look like I sent it myself as a self referral! The therapist was wondering why I was insisting the work be done at school when the school did not send the referral...I then had to clarify that I have the evidence showing where the school asked me to fill it in and return to them however they never had any intentions of supporting my concerns dispite this being an ongoing, unresolved issue since he was 2 and having meeting upon meeting saying they would.

I'd rather you say go away were not going to do rather than say yes we will, and we will support but then sneakily detach yourself from any involvement. In his end of year report, they did not mention any of his weaknesses, these reports should be balanced and a try reflection of the child ( even the useless school of my big DS point out his weakness) not just a tick box excersice to get them off the hook at the expense of my DS speech.

I will no doubt end up home schooling him as I can't go through the same stress as I am with my big DS but I will make sure I make myself heard before he goes.

Madness...total utter madness.

Cheeky beggars! Our school took a year to even get round to making a referral and then said that that they had made it as fast as they reasonably could Hmm. The joke is that when we finally got an appointment it was cancelled because he was by then in a resi placement out of county.

I would suggest that you send a copy of the ICAN report to the school with a written request that they make a school request within 14 days to the MHS for a consultation by the SALT.
If they dont then go via the GP give him a copy of the report as well separately.

They have the report ( and then some), but are distancing themselves from everything. I have even showed them the paperwork from the previous NHS SLT saying if DS doesn't make progress the new therapist may want to give some imput. I have also pointed out that since he has started the school one of his assessment scores have declined, the stupid bat SENCO said " it's only one area" I then said he only has 2 main areas of difficulty, the SENCOP does not state there has to be a minimum number of needs before you address any difficulties, once the need has been identified then you need to address it...,

I also got the classic of "well there are worse off kids than your DS"

I really don't know why schools and LEAs even have a SEN dept as they don't ever want to address the issues anyway.
