Global developmental delay

My dd has a dx of global learning difficulties/ global developmental delay. Am currently going through statutory assessment process. Spoke to salt on the phone this morning as dd has had 2 courses of salt previously but discharged to attention problems and not engaging. Dd currently on waiting list for salt as school referred her again but salt are now saying dd does not have any speech and Lang needs as its all part of her developmental delay.

I'm confused by this. Dd has a phonological disorder and has problems with speech clarity that have affected her ability to learn phonetically and read, she is in yr 2 currently at p8 level for literacy.

Why would she have a need for salt before but not now?
Are dcs with global developmental delay not expected to recieve salt provision?

Any thoughts would be fab. Thanks

Yes LEA have req salt to formally assess as part of statutory assessment but salt are saying there isn't much point!

If and when they do assess will the percentiles be compared to that of OT etc? How can they assess clarity ?

If there is a need, there should be a provision. My ds with GDD is receiving SALT, every six weeks, but better than nothing. OT and Physio are being spectacularly useless though.

If the therapist can't engage a child, it's not a good therapist - our first SALT was the same, I complained and asked for a more experienced one.

It's total nonsense that speech is due to GDD and therefore not being offered therapy... I would contact Ipsea how to word a letter of complaint. They are just trying it on. And for now ask the SALT in writing for a reason why is dd discharged when there is SALt need clearly identified already.

That's like saying that a person with cancer does not need pain meds because it is all a part of their cancer.

Or a person with a broken leg doesn't need crutches because not walking is all a part of having a broken leg.

Who said this before me? ^

Either way. It is bollocks.

Can her SAL improve with therapy? That's the key question and I suspect the answer is a huge yes.

Which means that developing in this area can improve her access to an education.

Thanks starlight you have confirmed what I have been thinking. Previously the salt has said dds speech was making encouraging progress whilst having therapy, but discharged due to her anxiety. That was a year ago and now they say she has no salt needs, even tho her clarity is affecting her ability to learn phonetically and read.
Dd failed the phonics screening last yr with a score of 14 and has failed this yr but only scored 6, so how can they say she has no needs?

If ds is not receiving her SALT due to the inability of the Therapist to get her attention and engagement, then the SALT needs to either go on a training course or refer her to a SALT more specialist, or arrange for a behavioural consultant to be present.

Not just give up ffs.

That's terrible care, if speech issues are part of her delay then it needs help. They really make up any poop not to help them
