Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Would you expect any 1-to-1 support in this situation?

DS starts Reception in September. He doesn't have a dx yet but is on the waiting list for ADOS and I'm expecting a dx or AS/ HFA.

At Nursery (attached to his new school) he's on Early Years Action Plus and gets 6 hrs per week 1-to-1 suppport paid for by Preschool Inclusion funds.

I went to his transition meeting today and they're not going to give him any 1-to-1 at all in September. They want to 'wait and see how he does' first - but I think it's ridiculous to think he's going to cope with less support than he's getting at the moment.

Is there anything I can do to make the school change their minds, or is this par for the course?

I would apply for a statement now from the LEA and ignore any naysayers. It takes six months upwards to set up a statement if it is agreed so time is important. The LEA also work during the summer months. Use IPSEA's website www.ipsea.org.uk and arm yourself with a copy of the SEN Code of Practice (available online).

Was the SENCO at this meeting?. Why exactly haven't they decided to continue with his current paltry level of support?. (Lack of funds I daresay, devolved funding is bad news for children with SEN). This is indeed something I would certainly tackle them on now. This will keep happening though because SA plus is not legally binding (unlike a statement) and the support can all too easily be curtailed or stopped.

The school adopting their "waiting and seeing how he will get on" approach is a recipe for disaster. It could all fall apart all too quickly, he could well within a short period of time just about manage there of a day only for you to cop all his frustrations and meltdowns when he is at home. That scenario happens as well because the child's additional needs at school are simply not being met.

BTW if you have not already applied for DLA this is something I would also look into.

You are his best - and only - advocate here.

Thanks Atilla. Yes, the SENCO was at the meeting, she was the one talking about wanting to wait and see.

Haven't done anything about a statement yet because DS was supposed to be getting a Pupil Resource Agreement, but that seems to have come to nothing. It looks like I need to get on with it now.
