We have just had a letter from CAHMS saying DS doesn't meet their criteria so they are not going to see him......

They have, however, decided that I would benefit from a leaflet filled with hints and tips on dealing with ASD. That's fine, it really is, and there are some useful addresses and websites...

There is, however, this lovely gem... Feeling alone? Like you are the only one dealing with these problems? Why not read a book about Autism?

I may just be a bit peeved because we are getting fuck all support but it just struck me as less than helpful.

Why doesn't your ds meet the criteria?

coff33pot · 08/07/2013 23:03

You dont live in Cornwall by any chance do you?

The cahms here advised me should DS receive a DX of ASD then they would have to "wave us goodbye" because although they have a multi team to aid dx they have no experience or training to help with it Confused

Now thankfully there is an Autism Team in our area which were brill but far stretched.

I assume the criteria is the same everywhere for CAMHS. Unfortunately for a lot of people round here they have decided to only see the 'most severe' cases. I know a LOT of people who have had to fight and refer again and again to get their child some help. It's awful.

Oops double post sorry!

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 09/07/2013 11:33

oh god. I am sorry but that made me laugh.

Oh. A book! What a fantastic idea. If only I had ever thought to actually READ something about autism. It's all so very clear to me now...

bloody idiots.

when you are less angry, you may find yourself able to laugh at the stupidity of it.

RippingYarns · 09/07/2013 11:35

for fucks sake Angry

how the fuckety fucking fuck are they sure if he's never been seen by them?

AgnesDiPesto · 09/07/2013 11:40

Surely they meant join an autism book group Confused not to read the book on your own Wink
Here camhs only see children with mental health issues on top of autism eg depression, self harming, suicidal. Anxiety or OCD, behaviour probs etc is just part of autism and not merit support apparently.

popgoestheweezel · 09/07/2013 11:59

Same here, CAMHS said they couldn't help us even though ds was self harming at school at age 7! Because he might have an ASD (he subsequently has a diagnosis) and therefore the amazing ASD strategies that all schools reliably put into place will fix it. To be fair they did say to come back if strategies didn't help.

claw2 · 09/07/2013 13:13

www.chimat.org.uk/camhs/schools/tamhs

TAMHS (a scheme run by CAMHS) which is short for Targetting Mental Health in Schools, is how we got a referral accepted by CAMHS.

Not sure if the scheme is still running though or if there will be one in your area.

Bluebirdonmyshoulder · 09/07/2013 14:00

I'd amend the leaflet as follows and send it back to them -

Feeling the need to patronise someone? Wanting to pretend to care without actually helping in any way? Why not shove your caring carrot up yer arse!

Do what Bluebird said, please!! Bunch of fuck muppets :(

imawigglyworm · 09/07/2013 14:36

we got the same for my DS who has PICA, sensory processing disorder and a possible attention disorder. We were refused an appointment from cahms and behavioural physiologist because he didn't meet criteria and not a medical issue!?
Finally after being referred again got a on off appointment which was possibly helpful with forms for us and school to complete (will have to wait and see if we DO get a follow up appointment). Its all to do with the high demands of people wanting referals supposingly Hmm

claw2 · 09/07/2013 14:48

I think an EP could have done exactly the same job as CAMHS, have you tried an EP?

Flappingandflying · 09/07/2013 16:07

People say to me 'oh coping with Flying lads diabetes must be so hard, such a shock blah blah' but you get sooooo much support, help, free stuff. It's not great but it's a dam site better than Flyingboy's autism, dyspraxia and countless other shit he's got going on. We too got a poxy leaflet and that was it! The comparison between the treatment of the two conditions is laughable.

routineandrules · 09/07/2013 16:40

Ah I see this must be where im going wrong. Why didnt anyone say a book has all the answers. Did they say what the book was called as I havent managed to find it yet!!!
Fucking jokers.

neverputasockinatoaster · 09/07/2013 21:21

We don't meet the criteria because at the moment he isn't severe enough...

I am calm today and actually I do think it is funny! I love the idea for amending the leaflet.. that made me Grin

I have not finished fighting - I just need to regroup and then go in again!

From what I've seen so far from CAMHS it seems to be very hit and miss doesn't it? I asked for a referral for assessment and I'm not sure they will do it even though she said herself he has a lot of ASD traits.

It's a shame because as always people get turned away who really need it. I think that's terrible that just because you have a diagnosis it means they won't help.

MumuDeLulu · 09/07/2013 22:43

Love the diagram

May add it to my sign off for future emails re miniMumu Grin

PS The best punishments always fit the crime. Write back to Camhs (cc County library service, cc National Autistic Society) with effusive thanks and a question about when they will give you the updated 'books on prescription' list, since you can't find anything suitable for yourself

AtYourCervix · 09/07/2013 22:48

I didn't even get a leflet Envy
