Hi

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on / experience of Mimiosprout? I'm thinking of trying this with my nearly 6-year old son. He is nearing the end of P1 (we are in Scotland), and is being taught using Jolly Phonics. He had global developmental delay but no formal diagnosis, his biggest challenges are in the areas of language (receptive and expessive) and fine motor skills.

He's well on the way to learning all of the 42 initial sounds in Jolly Phonics, but struggles to blend CVC words. He can hear the word most of the time when I sound it out though, but his recall of the individual sounds is slower for him and I think this is why he is struggling to remember the sounds in order and blend them.

So, I was thinking of trying Mimio over the holidays but have a couple of concerns. First, would it make any difference or should we just continue the Jolly Phonics route? Also, and more importantly, would this interfere with how he is being taught at school - am scared of totally confusing him!

Anyone with any experience and willing to share?

Many thanks!

I know JP has a good reputation but I haven't used it.
I know plenty about Mimiosprout though as a researcher, practitioner and satisfied parent user.
If you use it exactly as recommended and do so until you have finished all 80 episodes, I virtually guarantee you will see major improvements.

I have seen Mimiosprout change many children's lives which is truly amazing and still gives me shivers up my spine.
Moreover, it's fun!

Great, thank you! I wonder if you could help me out with another quick question. Am looking at mimio.com website, and can see the blurb about mimiosprout, but cannot for the life of me see where to download or purchase the software to use at home. Am I looking in the right place?J

On the right you will see a link for a free trial and also a link which says 'purchase'

does anybody know if I would have to pay customs if I order headsprout?

My top tips are don't help (except for rewarding and encouraging), don't rush it (repeat episodes that have a score below 90-95%), be consistent and work on areas of weaknesses outside of the programme.

Also, I've found that the progress is exponential, so you only really see the gains at the end, though they are huge.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/06/2013 08:40

Though I believe that the programme is the quickest route to those gains.

Choc, it is delivered online so no. Smile
You will probably get a slim envelope of papers and a progress map but that will be it.
That's one of the things that is so great about it.
You can do it anywhere anytime.

moondog · 27/06/2013 15:18

What will really help you measure progress is a baseline assessment of reading skills before starting. Re-administer when you have finished all 80 episodes.

chocnomore · 27/06/2013 18:22

thanks moondog. that is perfect. there is a $9.99 shipping charge and i wondered what it is for.

moondog · 27/06/2013 18:29

Hope it goes well.
Very important to remember that the programme responds individually to each child so it will do all the prompting and correcting needed.
You don't have to and it is strongly recommended you don't as you will interfere with a highly sophisticated evidence based error correction process that has cost millions to develop over 10 years.

Keep your child on track with frequent 'Well done!' and 'You're doing great!' comments and ensure they speak out loud when asked to.
Enjoy!

Many thanks all! Although I still can't seem to work out how to buy it. From the links on the right-hand side of the MimioSprout page, the 'parents click here' button just takes me back to the home page, the free trial link looks like it it's directed at schools only, and the purchase link gives me a list of resellers in the UK? I just assumed you would pay and access online - am I in completely the wrong place?

They have recently been taken over by Mimio (as so successful) which is irritating. Someone else I dealt with mentioned same hassle. I'd email them.
