Parenting Course

Have discovered a lady that does a parenting course near me, it's £750 for six 121 sessions 90 mins each.

Does anyone have any experience of something similar?

Quite desperate for help now and willing to try anything.

Thanks

Camhs don't want to know. It seems like a lot of money but am a leetle desperate.

She has been on tv I know that's not a formal qualification these days!

Is there a children's centre near you that you could ask? Is your health visitor any good, cpuld they refer you? I don't think you should have to pay that.much

Tittytats · 26/06/2013 21:57

Dd is 7 do you still qualify for a health visitor at that she? Seems a thick question but no idea? Children's centre is very focused on you libraries etc from what I can see.

She is ADHD and with DCD but her behaviour is now gotten to the stage where I am actually worrying that I will flip at her. Am single mum, finding it v v tough

That sounds really hard. I think technically a health visitor is pre school, but where I used to live our hv was out and about a lot and I would see her and so would have asked her. Have you tried your gp?

bananananacoconuts · 26/06/2013 23:17

We are going through as/adhd diagnosis for ds (6) and have had to go the long way through school nurse as gp was not interested at all!
Through the CAF meetings i have attended, i was invited to do a parent nurturing course for free at my local childrens centre. It's 10 weeks long with a different topic each week. I slated it at first as the teachers were always saying this may not apply to you so i actually thought i was wasting my time.
However, i'm nearing the end now, and i'm happy to say i was wrong! Some of the things we discuss don't apply to me, but each week there is always something that makes me think and i've tried to implement it with a lot of success!
Anyone can attend one of the courses. Give them a ring and see if there are any coming up soon. I also have a family support worker who comes round once a week to spend time with us and give strategies for any problems i'm having with ds. It also gives me a pat on the back as she always tells me i'm doing a great job which is nice to hear after a week of tearing my hair out!
Family support worker and parent nurturing course are all free and all voluntary. And come highly recommended from me!

The school nurse takes over from the HV at school age.

If your DC's difficulties are due to ADHD and DCD then I'd make sure this course will actually address those. A lot of generic parenting techniques fail to work with DC with SN, which is why parents of DC with ADHD get such bad press. They are seen as parenting badly whereas in actual fact they would have no difficulty with a NT DC. Sad

Do you claim DLA? This course or one similar tailored to DC with ADHD, DCD or ASD, might be a good use of the money if you really can't find anything free. Many people pay for private therapists, SALT etc so why not a behavioural specialist?

Tittytats · 27/06/2013 09:00

It's a one on one course that she will do designed around dd's needs specifically. She has experience in children with ADHD and other special needs.

I had a family link worker come over last year and she was very much into sticker charts etc.

That won't wash with dd her temper Is so fierce she literally doesn't care.

I've had a caf done but no response as yet do you know how long it will take,
