Getting a statement?

Just that really, after many years of having concerns about my daughters speech & language aswell as obsessive traits and many other problems i believe the time has come to get the help she needs at home and in school and to do that i now want to know what special needs she has in black and white.

The school don't seem to want to help other than with speech therapy and i'm not sure how to go about thisSad
I know from hearsay this is a long and winding road, so if anyone could tell me in plain english how and who do i see to get my dd statement it would be much appriecated. My family know & friends have even said they feel my concerns are right too.

Do i see the school, doctor, health visitor... and what do i actually do to get the ball rolling? She starts yr1 soon and i'm really worried that she won't progress as much as she should without 1-1 help, which is what she would get if i got the help she needed.

Tia x

IPSEA's website is very good at the whole process of statementing and their website is detailed below:-

www.ipsea.org.uk

There are model letters on there you can use.

BTW is your DD on anything like School Action Plus currently?. Is there an IEP (Individual Education Plan) for your DD?.

You can make the application yourself to the LEA and you do not need anyone's permission to do so. You will need to write to the Chief Education Officer at your LEA and give them six weeks to reply.

Keep posting here as well. This board will hold your hand.

Good luck!

Thankyou attilla, yes she under School Action Plus at present. Will look into writing to the LEA asap.

I phoned the health visiting team this afternoon as dd isn't 5 until august, and i asked for the health visitor to see my dd-well they were next to useless and said they will get the school nurse to phone me, so again i have been forwarded back to the school, but i guess like the time i asked for the school to pass me to senco it never materialised and the school never even bothered to phone me backAngry

Then i asked for a hearing test and again was told it is down to the school nursing team, school nursing team has only just given me a date for that, and it isn't until the middle of julyAngry, and its a hearing test ALL children are having because the nursing team obviously don't have the time for my dd-i did ask 4 months ago. Just feel like banging my head against the wall, as no-one seems to listen to my worriesSad

I would ask your GP to refer your DD to a developmental paediatrician asap and do not take no for an answer.

This person can diagnose as well as making appts re hearing tests which should be done by an audiology dept at hospital.

Thankyou again attila will make an appointment tomorrow. My doctors surgery is awful so i think i'll have a fight on my hands, but i can always change doctors if they refuse.

just keep pushing i have learnt that it isnthe only way to get them to sit up and listen. like atilla says go to gp, i went to gp for over a year and knew nothing about asd or being referred for social communication difficulties but i came across asd once on internet and knew from that day onwards what was what with ds . i told gp and suddenly he reffered ds and we were seen 3 months later. i dont know why but a lot of how seriously you are taken seems to be related to how sure you are and how hard you push. dont be fobbed off.

Thankyou Tibet, i'm going to push all the waySmile
