DS is being assessed in sept for possible autism and/ or SPD - this has been referred by school's ed psych. Someone replied to a previous post on here saying that would be an educational assessment and not a medical one but I wasn't aware you needed two. Will a statement follow an assessment and will an assessment necessarily give a diagnosis? What help will having a statement give DS? He is in ms school but over last 6 weeks has begun to struggle. I'm not sure whether this is a regression on his part or anxiety with the impending move up to year 1. I can't imagine him leaving that school, although their communication and direct support of DS knowing his abilities and limitations has been lacking. But if he did and went to a ss how would a diagnosis and/or statement work?

Hi there

This is a useful thread on what a statement gives you

Diagnosis and Statement are independent. However, I have seen that most parents get more provision once they have formal diagnosis.

How old is your son? You can ask for a statement yourself. See if this page helps you

For a diagnosis, you need to be seen by a multi-disciplinary assessment team(AFAIK). In our case, that comprised of SALT, Clinical Psy and dev Paed. They had reports from Portage and nursery also. They observed my daughter in the nursery and social clinic. Some parents get home visits also. In my case, the diagnosis didnt solve anything. It just opened more doors. What I do with an opened door is left to me.

In our case EP's reports were mainly useful for statementing.
