my dd 13 has just been told she has scoliosis by gp after I noticed her lower spine has a curve, and has been referred to specialist. Just wondering if any one else's dc has developed this at this age and what treatments were done?

scoliosis occurs in NT population but more prevalent in asd kids. usually the solution is a back brace that needs to be worn for 8 hrs a day either during school or during night time...wearing it for a length of time helps straighten up the back.

My DD has severe Scoliosis but because of her other complex health needs/disabilities, surgery is not an option.

A friends DD has had surgery for this condition, although I think her curve was at the top, not the lower spine. She had a metal rod put in her back to correct the curve and I think she was a similar age to your DD when she had the surgery and is 16 now. It is quite a big operation but I think she was only in hospital for 4 days although it was quite a long recovery at home, and a long time before she could take part in PE/Sport again.

Teen growth spurt is peak age for developing scoliosis, regardless of any other needs. Children with low ..or high..muscle tone are very prone .
My DS2 developed mild scoliosis at 13 , it worsened gradually but has stabilised now at 16 and wheile it's there, it'snot bad enough to need surgery..really only noticible to me:) Docs will x ray and keep a close on on your dd to see if more treatment is needed:)

Hi there, I just wanted to let you know about SAUK - the Scoliosis Association. They have a helpline, a website, and a network of representatives who can offer help and advice (I am one!) They publish a magazine with lots of helpful information and stories, and have a Facebook page. I would definitely suggest getting in touch with them - all the best to you both x

my dd age 12 has just been diagnosed with scoliosis - 20 degree curve. The consultant had no bedside manner whatsoever and showed my already tearful dd an old huge (dirty) brace and told her she'd have to wear simething like it for 3 years 23/7
We are all distraught!
