So 4 days after her arm cast came off, she broke her ankle <sigh>

Can you believe it?

3 weeks ago, DD1 fell over at school and broke a bone in her hand. Cue 1 week in a soft cast and 2 weeks in a below-elbow cast.

Her cast came off on Tuesday.

Today, she fell over on a bouncy castle at KIDS club (respite) and has a fractured growth plate in her ankle. I've just got home from A&E. Non weight-bearing.

Happy days.

Oh, the poor thing. Dd broke her leg when she was 4 and it was hell til she could walk on it.

why so long til she gets a proper cast? Dd got one 2 days after the break and hers was a full leg cast. We couldn't have kept her still with a half leg one.

We did put dd on the floor and let her drag it around as she wouldn't stay on the couch after the first day.

Thanks youarewinning.

I think it's so long because Fracture Clinic is only Monday-Friday 9-5, so if you break on a weekend, you have the backlog of those who broke on Thursday or Friday before they deal with those who broke on Saturday and Sunday.

Honestly, just turn up. It's an exceptional circumstance.
It'll be chaos anyway and they'll think it was their error.

She's got a clinic appointment tomorrow, so we'll wait. She's miserable, th.

Thanks for asking, Polter.

She's still miserable. I think she hit a low point today because she was sure she'd manage crutches over my dead body and in fact, she couldn't even manage a walking frame. She was too unstable and unco-ordinated with moving the frame forward, so ended up falling backwards.

The Dr said that there is no visible fracture on x-ray, but he feels that is likely to be because growth plates don't show on x-rays. He said the bruise is well pronounced, there was obvious soft-tissue swelling on both sides of her ankle on the x-ray, and the focus of the bruising and pain is exactly where the growth plate is.

So she's got a below knee fibre glass plaster cast with a walking boot. She's very unstable on it and he's said that for the first week, whilst she can weight-bear, he thinks she should be resting it because he's worried that it could swell and she wouldn't be able to tell us there was a problem.

There are no wheel chairs at the moment in our area. I'm wondering if I could wheel her Mac Major onto the bus, then she could transfer into her chair, now that she can weight-bear, and then spend the day in her Mac Major at school. I've spoken to the escort and we're going to take a look at school in the morning.

She, of course, is determined that in fact she is absolutely stable and can run Hmm

Glad cast is sorted. Hopefully there'll be a bit of bone healing by next week

Have I mentioned only 100 times how lovely DD1's school are?

DD1 was on a waiting list for a wheelchair, but it looks like it could be weeks Shock

SO school and I have come up with a plan. The school transport driver/escort have said they'll pick her up 30 minutes early, so they can get her on before the child who is using a wheelchair. That means I can wheel her onto the bus in her buggy. Then, she will transfer from buggy to chair, which is ok because she can weight bear.

School have agreed to meet her at the other end with one of their buggies, because there isn't room for DD1's buggy on the bus (or rather, not room to strap it down because the anchor points are being used for the wheelchair).

In the evening, a TA will wheel her out to the bus and they will load her on. When she gets home, I'll meet them on the pavement with her own buggy again.

A bit of an ordeal, but it means that I can go back to picking up DD2 and Mum doesn't have to do the school run each day.

That's wonderful news re the school. Smile

Sorry to hear DD is miserable. Sad

What is it with wheelchairs? The county seems to have a shortage all over. It' soooooooooooo frustrating.

I'm trying to keep perspective, but I really do think that it's a sad thing when a rich country (and let's remember we are, whatever austerity measures we may be taking) can't even deal with a broken bone easily.
