Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

I think DS mainstream school may be rolling out ABA to all the children!

They have signed up to this which is a class positive behaviour system. It even collects data.
Are we seeing ABA breaking into the mainstream??

How exciting!
Keep us posted.
I'm going to look into that one in more depth tomorrow.

I agree I am dubious about how they will recognise and teach behaviour, how a teacher of 30 will be able to be consistent and whether it will work on the children it needs to (and not just the ones who don't need it). DS has his own system / teaching staff so it does not impact on him except he will no longer be the only child with a token board; but tbh even the fact they are thinking about how to change behaviour using a positive system is a huge step forward from where we started with DS's school. I am not convinced its the solution for children like DS who need something very individual / more tangible rewards but I am pleased they are recognising the need to address behaviour in a consistent use of positive rewards not punishments. That in itself is progress.

Oh thank god. It will probably be rubbish Grin to begin with but the beginnings of a new direction.

Hope they put the effort in that gets the rewards.

That's what I think star. It probably won't work brilliantly but at least they are moving beyond marble in a jar class treat scenario and thinking about making it more individual and thinking about what behaviours to encourage rather than just reacting to negative behaviours. I feel a sense that ABA type approaches can creep in via use of apps and technology and perhaps challenge how things have been done in the past. Be interesting to see what behaviours ds gets rewarded for and how individual to him and his IEP targets they are.

Wow! Promising! And there is an ABA unit starting near me next year, attached to a mainstream primary. There are 4x as many kids chasing places as are places available. Change a coming?

StarlightMcKenzie · 14/06/2013 14:06

There's an ABA free school opening in London too, for HFA and co-located with a state secondary to enable it to offer full range of gcses.

Changes indeed.

StarlightMcKenzie · 14/06/2013 14:06

They said that if the demand for places outstrips supply they'll just start another school.

I'd love to be able to get an ABA unit into a mainstream school here. DS is ready to work in groups but not so much a group of 30. Having a small class of children like him alongside mainstream would be perfect.

I am not sure the school recognise this intervention as ABA - but I would like to think they are watching what ABA staff are doing for DS and borrowing ideas from that... I can live in hope some of it is rubbing off / getting through.

Its quite funny to think because of DS all the other kids are going to end up with a virtual token board! There are several quite tricky children in his class so I think it dawned on them they had to do something, especially when DS who has a statement listing challenging behaviours was almost the best behaved pupil!
