9 year old son - issues at school ... "the Spectrum"

So it's a long story ... my son is nearing the end of year 4, has just been referred to pyschology department after a year long wait and seeing an autism paedotrician twice who has mentioned she thinks he may have dispraxia. Hubby and I were convinced she was going to mention Aspergers as he shows clear signs of this. He has poor core strength, hypermobility, balance which are all symptons of dispraxia so we have to wait and see if we get a diagnosis, soon we hope!
So, he really struggles on a social level with his peers at school on a daily basis, they tease, taunt and torment him, he tells us different names everyday and teacher/head master have supported us in some capacity but not enough really. It breaks my heart, my son is so pleasant, well mannered and can talk the hind leg off a donkey and that is the main reason he alienates himself at school bless him!!!

Asked him today who he does get on with in his class of 30 children and he could name just one child ... its really sad.
Apparently although this has not affected him academically too much his class teacher told the school nurse on Friday that he now finds it hard to concentrate and his hand writing is suffering (left handed with hypermobility does not help) ... this is news to us so even more concerned now. Complete lack of communication.
So I am thinking now, do we move him to another school, bullies exist everywhere so will it help?? I really think a smaller class size would really benefit my son but if all schools are 30 pupils there's no point upheaving.
Would appreciate any advice if anyone has similar stories ....

Hi sorry to hear your son has to put up with the bullying.

was just wondering is your son statement?

my advice would be to contact the National autistic society.
They have help me with my son, who has autism and ADHD.

Your so right, your son would do better in a smaller class. I have been fighting my L.A for the past 3 years, and at first they refuse to assess him for a statement and i took them to appeal. the L.A backed out 2 days before. so i got the statement and i wasnt happy, as their was really nothing in it..its all about the wording!

I then appeal again about the statement and the school..i want a special one, as i feel that Autistic children should not be in mainstream sch, they just cant cope! ( dont care what anyone say)..i went to appeal and lost the sch but got speech thearpy for 1/2 an hour a week and O.T for 45 mins a week, lunches and breaks cover and stuff should be trained in autism!...yeah right!, in a mainstream setting!...

So i appeal AGAIN to the upper tribunal and on the 17th june i won another appeal cos their had been a error of law at first tribunal.

My new appeal hearing is 15th july and i'm confident its gonna go my way! as the L.A and school have put nothing in place. (whats in his statement )

Please if theres any advice i can give you its:

  1. dont give up fighting for your son, if you dont fight for him no one else will.
  1. dont believe anything your L.A tell you, as they will give you nothing!..THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS.
  1. Please get in contact with the N.A.S. They will help you loads. i.e Diagnosis, statement and tribunal...they no the law!

Good luck with everything, let me know how its going.
