Just if you are interested - I did my presentation to a Health and Social care class. Topic: Down's syndrome and its effects in terms of growth and development.

the kids ( although not incredibly bright) listened and then later in small groups asked really good questions.

However - I have to wonder how successful I was overall when a girl asked me after class to explain how one 'caught' it again?!?!

Can't be too surprised - was told by a colleague that there is a teacher at school who thought Down's syndrome could be cured?!?!!?

Oh boy do we have a way to go yet.....

fascinating Eidsvold, terrible how we have to educate the adults first though!!

Yep, education, education, education...but on an 'up' note, I have just received a training CD ROM made BY DS adults on how to make venues accessible and welcoming to people with learning disabilities. It's really good.
It has been made for theatres, but would be relevant to any service aiming to welcome the public.

well done eidsvoldSmile I think you will always get that kind of attitudes but people arent expected to know about all things and i suppose her being young is an excuse(!) People used to think my sister could be cured from cystic fibrosis (and that they could catch it) But I think the worst thing was people used to think a transplant was a cure, I am not talking about a few people I am talking about everyone - why do people think this?

Anyway off subject hopefully if people like you continue to educate youngsters in our schools and the inclusion policy does 'really' work, hopefully people kids and adults alike will have a better understanding of special needs

well done youSmile

Well done on doing the presentation
I teach children with special needs within mainstream school and it still amazes me to this day the attitudes of collegues towards the children with special needs
