Homeopathy and ASD/ ADD

FreshWest · 05/06/2013 12:48

Does anybody have any experience of homeopathic remedies used for ASD and add? It's amongst a few things I've been looking into to help dd, the Internet obviously is full of miracle cures which I'm treating sceptically.
Which brings me to ask the collective knowledgable wisdom of MNSN.

Any info both positive and negative welcome. Thanks in advance for any help.

Homeopathy has been widely discredited. Avoid.

popgoestheweezel · 05/06/2013 18:30

I haven't got any experience of homeopathy in ASD but I know that there is no medical help for ASD and very, very little evidence on any intervention so you do have to look elsewhere.
I have an open mind on it's validity. I have used a homeopathic remedy once (didn't visit a homeopath- just did a bit of research) for carpal tunnel syndrome and it did work but I had to keep on taking it so, if I left off the remedy the CTS returned. So, I decided to ask my GP who recommended surgery which I had, it was an out patient procedure but had a major disruptive effect on my life (a separate operation on each hand and but now I have a decided weakness in both hands and cannot write for any period of time without suffering pain for several days afterwards. I wish I'd stuck to the homeopathy that's for sure!
On the one hand I am all for scientific evidence but I also know that in reality most of the money for research comes from the pharmaceutical industry and therefore is not going to be spent on studies that support alternative medicine.
The worst that can be said for it is that it is just placebo effect- the 'active' ingredients are in such minute quantities they'd be highly unlikely to do harm- if you don't mind spending the money then you've nothing else to lose by trying alternatives.

DS1 and DS2 have very good results with homeopathy.

You need to find a Cease Therapist

Would highly recommend it.

popgoestheweezel · 05/06/2013 22:44

Placebo effect is very powerful- true, the subconcious mind is actually in charge not the conscious!

PJM18 · 06/06/2013 00:00

It may be worth asking if there is any homeopathy on the nhs in your area. We have an nhs homeopathic clinic and I know a few GP's who use it. Don't know if it would help or not but may be worth a try. Don't think they would do it on the nhs if it was totally discredited.

mymatemax · 06/06/2013 00:08

I dont know about homeopathy but Reiki has helped reduce ds2's anxiety levels when he has had particularly anxious spells

ouryve · 06/06/2013 00:13

You mean water? It never fixed my boys.

MinuettoAllegretto · 06/06/2013 01:05

Ourvye - did you go to a cease therapist or a regular homeopath?

And did she really prescribe water? That's highly unusual.

What problem was she trying to help with?

How long did you see her for?

Ok...didn't realise I was going to start a fight. Sorry first of all. Just trying to get a balanced idea of the positive and negative experiences of people who had tried this avenue in relation to ASD or add.

I realise that for any topic there will always be those who are pro and those who are con. Would make for a very dull world if everybody agreed on everything. Smile
I've glanced though the article polter and agree that in many cases it probably is a 'placebo' effect, but for many people in desperation to see results, then that's ok isn't it? If people wish to put their belief and hope in something then who am I to argue? I, for one, am not especially religious but I respect the choice of those who choose to believe in it. And it gives them comfort in times of need.

I understand that you might think that it's all woo nonsense which is why I'm trying to garner different opinions and experiences before I make any decisions.

I also meant to add that I'm aware that there is no cure for ASD and I don't for one second believe the stories that I've seen where a child has been "cured".
I just want to explore all potential avenues that might help my dd manage her ASD a bit better and by extension hope for a better family life.

I've never been to a homeopath, Minuetto because it's total woo.

ouryve · 06/06/2013 13:26

Of course, there would be no placebo effect if I gave a homeopathic "remedy" to DS2.

louise4012 · 06/06/2013 18:58

Hi FreshWest,

Ignore all the skeptics on this page who know nothing whatsoever about homeopathy and have a look at this page of cures of ASD and autism.
www.impossiblecure.com/showstories.php

louise4012 · 06/06/2013 19:05

The link to the cures is here as this forum appears to post hyperlinks rather than weblinks. I am not sure whether this hyperlink will show, if not, you will need to copy & paste the impossiblecure link into your browser from my above comment, to see the list of cures. There are lots of these testimonials there about children. The Impossible Cure book was written by Amy Lansky, who used to be a computer scientist at NASA, and the book is about the cure of her son who was autistic, using homeopathy. The webpage I have shown lists all the people who wrote in to tell their successes using homeopathy for their children with ASD and Autism.

I think it depends what you are trying to achieve with the homeopathy. Our GP prescribed homeopathic tablets for my son with ASD for his anxiety. They work a treat.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 06/06/2013 19:10

freshwest the tablets he was given are Ignatia Amara.

We found that anxiety plays a huge role in our DS life, we are only just realising that that accounts for many of his behaviours. It's worth a try..

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/06/2013 19:15

There was a mother speaking about the positive impact homeopathy had had on her ADHD son on Radio 5 this morning link. Not sure if any specific info was given, I got to where I was going in the car before it finished.

As a scientist I find it hard to believe it works to be honest, but am prepared to have an open mind about it.

Hope she made lots of money from it.
