Son - almost 7, recently diagnosed with ASD, dyspraxia & hypermobility. Not yet statemented but application has gone in.

He is struggling both educationally and socially at school but school are adamant that they will meet his needs there and are beginning to get things in place regardless of there being a statement or not - especially as we could be in for a long wait!

Anyway, today, my friend who is a TA was providing classroom cover for my sons class and told me after school that she was quite concerned about him.

I didn't know this but he has been given some blu-tac as a fiddle toy because it keeps him occupied and stops him becoming distracted - fab!
The only thing was which concerns me a lot is that he is sitting at a table with his back to the rest of the class whilst his classmates participate in whatever is going on but he is engrossed in what he is doing, oblivious to what else is going on.

He gets extra 1:1 support daily outside the classroom but this is extra support going over his literacy and social skills.

I emailed the senco as soon as I heard this but I think she had left by then as I haven't heard back and she and the rest of the SN team at the school are great at what they do.

I had already spoken to her this afternoon about some concerns that he is beginning to realise he is behind, calling himself "dumb" and "stupid" so I feel that this sitting doing his own thing is going to add to him feeling inadequate.
I think they have let him sit at a table rather than on the carpet because of his inability to sit still.

Ask them how they plan to meet his needs without a statement in writing.

Be careful how you phrase it because your friend will be in trouble for speaking to you about this. I sometimes get info this way but am always very careful about how I discuss the issues as I am sure you don't want your friend to have problems at work.

I work at the school 2 days a week as a trainee TA so I'm sure it'll be fine that she has spoken to me especially as I have a good relationship with the senco - I asked how he'd been because it was the first day back and his only friend has left the school so it was only brought up because I asked.
