that's digusting. termination at 35 weeks ffs for a condition that could hardly be described as incompatible with life.. and she gave birth 2 weeks later. I don't know why they don't just go the whole hog and legalise killing disabled babies at birth. "oh whoops there's wrong 'un better bump it off and try again" Angry

heartinthecountry · 22/05/2006 12:23

Sitting here with a 31 week baby in my tummy the idea that I would termintate for any reason is unthinkable! What the f**k was that doctor thinking of? Just goes to show how little regard some of the medical profession still has for any person with any kind of disability.

It's been interesting actually to see how various medics I have met through this pregnancy have responded when I have told them about dd. Some have been genuinely interested in a medical/developmental sense, others have looked a bit uncomfortable and mumbled about how it must be hard work. One completely ignored it altogether - obviously couldn't think of anything positive to say.

PinkKerPlink · 22/05/2006 12:24

I think it has put me off having any more children considering the hospital in question is where I would have to have any future children aswell

hello hitc, how are you?

92% are aborted?? Shock :( Is that an accurate figure, does anyone know? I knew the abortion rate was high but hadn't realised just how high it was. :(

arfy · 22/05/2006 12:50

it really is just 2 weeks away from killing a baby at birth isn't it

it must be way past time for this 1967 (!!!!!) act to be updated.
there have been stories before about the definition of "there is a substantial risk that if the child were born it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped". Things have changed SO much since then.
Does anybody know if there are any petitions about changing this, or if any MPs are trying to table early day motions or debates or anything? I'd be very keen to sign anything/write to someone to get this looked at.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 22/05/2006 13:36

92% - wow. I missed that on first reading.

r3dh3d · 22/05/2006 16:00

Because they didn't (still don't, really) know what caused DD1's problems, they were scanning us all the way through my pregnancy with DD2. We had a fetal MRI at 34 weeks, for which we got the results back at 35 weeks. We had elective section at 38 weeks.

The results were clear at 35 weeks, but I don't know what they would have said to me if they weren't. [sad}

stapo1 · 22/05/2006 21:24

OH my god 35 weeks. MY ds was born at 28 weeks & very much a beautiful baby & now a beautiful little boy with sn.
I believe in choice but 35 weeks- surely its time for change!
