Toileting a child who requires a hoist when out and about.

Hi,

My friend has a teenager who due to their level of mobility needs a hoist to move them from their wheelchair to a bed for their pad to be changed. Becasue of low muscle tone they cannot support their own weight at all. My friend is finding it really hard getting out and about and accessing the community as she doesnt want to venture too far from home incase they need to change Dss pad. What does everyone esle do? Is there anything in the community that they could access in the evenings or weekends so that he could be toiletted out in the community. Obviously this is limmiting his chances to experience life!

Any help, advice or ideas would be really welcome.

We have the same problem with DD. We can't get her out of the chair without a hoist so we tend to have shorter days out. We use a good barrier cream (Cavilon) and the pads DD wears are quite absorbant. We put a disposable conti pad on her wheelchair under her sling to protect the seat cover (as it is fabric) and then hope for the best. She usually manages fine if she is just wet and as she is often constipated and needs suppositories to help her open her bowels, we are usually ok on that score.
We went on holiday to East Yorkshire last year and paid a visit to the Changing Places facility in Hull after visiting The Deep. There was a queue to use it - clearly showing this is major problem for a growing number of families.
We have bought a portable mobile hoist for when we go away, but it is not ideal for a day trip out and you would still have to find somewhere suitable to use it.
