Hi, I wanted to ask. My DD is almost 5. And soon we will have a special needs pushchair. When traveling, do the airlines charge buggy as extra luggage? Or it is free, does not included in luggage allowance? Do I need some kind of letter confirming that it is equivalent to a wheelchair? As my daughter's walking difficulties are not visible(she has neuromuscular without a name yet), but people tend to comment that she's not walking because she's lazy.

Travelled last year with ds - asd / learning difficulties, he uses a mac major buggy. It is classed as a mobility aid and should be carried free of charge (check out the website of the airline you are fllying with they should have a number to call / email to arrange special assistance)

I also prebooked assistance through the airport. DS should have had his buggy back on landing but it got taken to the terminal, instead we were met with a wheelchair and taken to baggage hall.

I didn't need a letter from the gp.

I have quite big and VERY expensive special needs buggy (Kangoo). But Im worried to travel with it in case they break something in transit...

I emailed Special Assistance when we booked our holiday saying "Due to my son having Autism would it be possible for both airports to provide special assistance and a walker as he finds queuing frustrating and distressing. This could lead to inappropiate behaviour such as shouting, screaming, kicking, pushing, punching etc. I believe it would be in his best interests and the interests of other people if he was given special assistance at the airport along with a walker in order that he can queue jump at check-in, security and passport control and have priority boarding." I printed out the email and took it straight to the security desk on the day and had a brilliant experience.

Wheelchairs and special needs pushchairs are carried FOC. You just tell them you will need it until you get to the plane and will need it back again as soon as you get off the plane.
