childrens dla & type 1 diabetes

Does anyone know if you can claim dla for a 4 year old child with type 1 diabetes?
I was thinking that if the criteria is that the child requires more care than a 'normal' child of the same age, then you would be able to claim. The child uses an insulin pump & there is a lot of care involved.
But someone told me that because diabetes isn't classed as a disability, then you can't get dla.
Just wondered if anyone here knew?

Given that your child has an insulin pump I am surprised that no one suggested DLA before.

Diabetes is recognised as a disability. You can claim DLA for a child with Type 1, it is paid from the 3rd month following diagnosis. Your DSN should be able to provide you with the paperwork. The paperwork is not pleasant as it lengthy, but you are likely to get middle or higher rate.

Yes my nephew gets DLA middle rate. He is 3 and has type one diabetes and an insulin pump. He definitely has significantly more care needs and supervision than a child of his age who does not have diabetes and that is the criteria for DLA.
