can you still get an ASD diagnosis based on traits or do paeds settle for DDS? Any experiences of this?

if syndromes have been ruled out then an ASD would be diagnosed by a pattern of behaviours displayed over time, diagnosed by a multidisciplinary team (most often Psychologist or Paediatrician, SaLT and sometimes OT), using standardised tests to assist in diagnosis (most often ADOS and ADI-R or DISCO). I don't know what DDS is, sorry.

Oh sorry, I meant devt delay. I just thought that the full micro array was so thorough that it overruled the traditional methods of diagnosis?

Well DS3's MicroArray results came back with 'nothing significant detected', and fragile X was ruled out, but they are still doing ADOS testing in May...

Hello my dd was diagnosed with autism and the microarray test was done at a later date.

chocjunkie · 23/03/2013 18:19

we had microarray testing (still waiting for results). Dd already has a dx of autism.

the consultant explained to us the in the majority of cases in children with Asd the microarray tests don't bring up anything and it is not diagnostic tool for asd but rather a means to find an underlying genetic cause for the autism.

thanks. So does that mean that they would focus on environmental factors having ruled out the genetic early on?

DS already had his ASD dx prior to his genetic tests. Based on ADOS, ADI, DAWBA assessment and WISC tests.

His results came back nothing detected.

As well as the above obs and assessments they also based his dx on family history of traits (one dx) and events during birth.

DD had her ASD dx before the micro-array testing was done. In her case the testing did then show up an anomaly that is at a known autism susceptible point and is probably underlying her ASD (and other issues). We were however warned that genetic testing rarely shows up anything and I did feel the consultant was quite surprised when the results came back with something other than a normal result.
