DD2's comprehension improving - any drawbacks I'm not considering?

DD2's backstory - undefined tendency to literal thinking and a need for explicit teaching of concepts, but not recognised at school level.

So, DD2 couldn't seem to follow even the most basic plot unless the story was read back to her, and seemed not to be able to answer questions about what might happen next, or what had happened before.

I went to the library with her and found a set of books she was drawn to. They are 'fairy' books, with different themes, but the central characters stay the same throughout the series and always involve naughty goblins.

I've been reading a chapter or two per day, stopping every so often to ask a question, point out a meaning of a word, check for understanding. DD2 has improved massively through this. She's starting to retain the story, and even predict what might happen next and why.

This can only be good, right?

I have this niggling thought that by doing this at home, it covers the issues up and then she won't get help at school. But, so far, they aren't helping anyway...so I need to just keep doing what I can, don't I?

It's confusing.

They are :)
I was very unhappy at school at that time and the half hour I got to read that book was the highlight of my day.

I do LFT with both my children EVERY DAY, because it takes only a few minutes per child for the basic work (a bit longer if/when the scenario captures their interest and we extend it, but I only do that when they remain at the table asking).

The great thing about it is that the scenes are real life ones and every 2-3 you come across one that has loads of meaning for the child. Like yesterday my ds got cross because I made him get up (away from his window seat) on the bus as someone with a walking stick came on, - so tomorrow we're going to do that scenario. There's one about a broken toy, about fogetting PE kit, about falling over and grazing your knee, about fighting over the remote control, about knocking things off shelves in supermarkets etc etc.

It seems to give my kids 'social comprehension' as well (is that even a 'thing'?)

And, - Gramatically-challenged though I am, I still feel I need to apologise for that last post.

I hear really good things from all quarters about HTTYD
Handy, yes do. Be glad to pass it on. Smile
Yes Star, the issue of 'social understanding' (aka Pragmatics) is huge topic in itself. Glad you are finding it yourself. Did my guidance on this and the way I showed you how we have tweaked it help?

Badvoc · 23/03/2013 11:02

Zzzzz ds also likes the usbourne historical lies series...James cook, Columbus etc...

Badvoc · 23/03/2013 11:02

Sorry about that zzzzz :)
Is amazing what happens once you get something they are interested in.
Does your ds like top trumps (or is that a daft question!? :))
My ds is planning on making his own HTTYD top trumps cards over Easter :)
I also found that having them on audio cd is nice for a wind down last thing at night when I don't want any more bloody tv....

Can I sort of hi jack quickly and ask a quick question on "literal thinking " that lougle mentioned please

Ds3 (who I have talked about on SN before ) has a great trouble in comprehension of stories and his books

He is 8 on Lit support and so reading books still with lots of pictures in it .

He has just finished a book about Mr and Mrs fox and their cubs tricking a tiger....

He asked me if they were married...I said yes because they are known as Mr and Mrs....he looked at the picture and said .."well they aren't wearing wedding rings "" !

How would anyone take this ??

Thanks !

Handywoman · 23/03/2013 16:46

I have ordered Language for Thinking - I DO luff this place!!!!

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 23/03/2013 17:58

God, I did exactly the same with DD. with these 'books'. It DID help. Before I started, DD's reading age was 6 years below her chronological age (I.e. she couldn't bloody read). By the time we had got through 91 of these books (that's how many there were at the time, DD is older now), her reading age was 'only' 3 years behind.

But oh, god they are as full as ditchwater to read after you have read 4 of them...

And I'm sure a G&T would have helped! Grin

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 23/03/2013 17:59

Polter - I have had the misfortune to suffer both Rainbow Fairies AND bloody Beast Quest (DD & DS2).

Thank God for DS1 reading Jules Verne and Terry Pratchett!!

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 23/03/2013 18:00

Oh God, I must be insane - I've fone a load of Dinosaur Cove too!!

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 23/03/2013 18:04

Maybe How To Train Your Dragon should be my next port of call for DS2.

DD is reading the older Judy Blume books right now. Very slowly, but she's reading them herself. For pleasure. Out if choice. First time she's read anything without being under duress!
