Can't remember where I read/heard this, but I think it was something like a 1 in 10 chance if you already have a child with ASD. But, then, I've seen other statistics that generally say up to 4 in 100 children are on the spectrum now...and other things I've read say much lower numbers than that (4 in 10 000, for eg).
The one thing I would bear in mind is that there does seem to be the genetic link, which might increase the chances of it.

Am sure someone more clued up will be along soon....

Ok, will try to be more specific this time - trying to find where Ive read thing on this! In George and Sam, by Charlotte Moore, she's written a chapter on "does it run in the family" and she mentions going to the Maudsley hospital for genetic counselling. This is after she's had 2 boys who are autistic.
They asked her to compile a list of all family members, back to g/parents and spot any autistic traits, or others along behaviour, eccentricities etc. She came up with eccentricities but no obvious autism other than her 2 sons, and was given a 1 in 20 chance of it happening again with her 3rd child.

Over 100 times more likely than Joe Public, which I think translates to something like a 1 in 10 chance or something like that. But will depend on the reasons for you first child's autism.

:(

does anyone know if this is the same for boys and girls? Obviously autism is more prevalent in boys than girls, but is the risk the same with boy or girl siblings?
