How do your children cope with a new teacher each year?

Hi there.

I had my daughter's parents' 'evening' this afternoon, and the above question popped into my head.

She is in her first year of primary school and has high functioning autism. The teacher said that he's putting my daughter on some sort of passport programme whereby her new primary two teacher will become included in future meetings and will be given a folder about my daughter's progress. This is to allow dd to form a relationship with the new teacher and for them both to become familar by the time the new term starts after summer.

I'm sure my daughter will be fine. Probably a bit unsettled for the first month, as she is with all new situations, but i'm concerned the parting from her current teacher will really upset her. Is there anything i can do to make the process easier? Or is it too soon to even be thinking about this?

I love dd's current teacher. Oh, how much simpler things would be if she could keep him for the next 6 years.

My Dd3 has often wasted the first term of a school year settling. I agrer that this transition sounds amazing you should grab it with both hands and not let goGrin

Thank you both. Yep, i agree. I'm in love with this teacher and how much effort he makes with dd in the classroom. Will be sad to see him go. Fingers crossed the next teacher is as good.

My ds school are pretty good with this too- they do a transition book, pics and info and the like - he goes to meet the teacher (although he does know them). It does really help that first term if they make a bit of effort here. Also good for the staff too, because they get a good idea of the child's strengths and weaknesses and how best they learn.
