Daughter has just turned four and we had her Parents Evening tonight. She is beginning to speak a little bit more at Nursery and the teachers have recommended we organise a SaLT appointment for her.She does speak well, but misses off the beginning sound of some words .We have noticed this at home, but I thought it could be when she is excited about communicating her ideas and thoughts. So how do I go about organising an appointment? I realise that it could take an age for appointments and assessments to come through,so I want to get the ball rolling asap before she begins Reception.Any help much appreciated!

Hi, school should be able to request this for you, or alternatively you can request a referral through your GP. I have been many times to the GP asking for referrals for my DD. Good luck

HV should also be able to refer.

Thanks Kal and Handy! School have said that parents have to ask for referral so I will go to GP or HV.I feel a bit crap as a mum actually.I feel like the school may think me lax and unattentive about her speech, but it's different if you hear your own child isn't it? Maybe you 'fill in' the blanks or something. Anyways, thanks for your replies!

Don't feel rubbish. Children that age develop at different stages with spreech, and yes US as mums do hear and fill in the blanks. My DD is 12 and I still fill in the gaps with speech and am still training her on pronouncing sounds. (speech difficulties due to glue ear/ audutory processing difficulties) At least you can get some advice and the help whilst she is young.
Good luck

Don't feel rubbish. I have a 5yo ds and he has been referred twice for speech therapy. 1st time he wouldn't cooperate at all and so they said there was little point in having sessions with him, now he goes once a week and really looks forward to it. He had abnormally large tonsils which he had removed over a year ago and his speech has improved since then, but I got the impression his pre-school thought it was my fault because he had a dummy until he was four and a half. Speech therapist told me not to worry about the dummy as he has other issues too, and they were more important. Now we've got rid of the dummy!

Sparklymommy, do you think your DS's speech has improved after taking the tonsils out? Did you talk to the doctors about it and what did they say? It's just my DD had a speech delay and her speech can still be unclear- she also has huge tonsils so your post made me think that tonsils might be part of the reason why... Would be very grateful if u could tell about your experience!
OP, sorry for hijack!
