Once child has statement how often should they be assessed by EP

Sorry, know I am asking lots of questions at moment.

DS2 has had statement for just over 2 years, only had one SALt assessment since, no EP assessment since.

DS1 had statement a year, just under really. How often should they see EP?

Thanks

As far as I know, normally for transitions between schools (if it is requested), or if something has changed significantly. Otherwise, not at all. The EP that is, as EP slots are like gold dust.

SALT - depends on what the assessment said - what did it recommend?

Have to say, DS2 has never been reassessed by the EP since he got his statement, 8 years ago! We do see the autism advisory teachers, though, but not an EP.

Thanks toomuch, ok can understand the EP for transitions. Any idea how far in advance they do these? DS2 is year 4 in an ASD unit. Just starting to panic if he will cope in mainstream with support from a unit or need more than that.

SALT report again for youngest is worrying but he is making slow progress. DS1 is 14 and am really panicking as transition is looming and he is 'stuck' in a PRU at present. He is still on role at his mainstream so keep having texts saying "sending home options booklets" etc when DS has been told no options for him as he is in the PRU. Aargh just getting more stressy all the time.

Oh Ellen 8 years! Shock

Maybe I need to push for more autism outreach support. Oh crap, am rubbish at trying to keep them both sorted.

Hi

Once your child has a statement they only need to see the EP if there is a change in the child's needs. If the child's needs as described are still relevant they may never need to see another EP - EPs are there to describe need not identify provision. Any minor changes (such as changing a child's attainment levels or updating the overall description of the child's functioning because they have got older, not because there has been a fundamental change) can be done by the school and the local authority via the annual review process. EPs aren't always needed for transition either if it's all straightforward and there is no controversy (eg a kid in specialist primary moving up to specialist secondary, everyone agrees this is what is needed) but may be needed sometimes at transition (eg a child has been in mainstream at primary but school and parents feel that specialist might better meet their needs at secondary).

Usually at transitions. DS2 was re-assessed at transition from EYFS to KS1 and both boys at KS1 to KS2 (happening at the moment for DS2) and by request at the moment for DS1, as he's struggling and we want to ask for a change of placement at annual review, this year. He's in year 4. Re-assessment was requested last Spring and we didn't get a slot until the EP was visiting someone else and encountered DS1 having an enormous meltdown, before Christmas. We have one EP assigned to our whole area, who works part time in that particular role, so is kept pretty busy.

Thank you ilikemysleep and ouryve for replies. All makes sense. DS2 is going into year 5 sept so my head is in over drive worrying what school he will be going to. Know it's a way off but things went badly wrong with DS1 in secondary so want to feel I am doing all the right things.

Of course DS2 will be moving to secondary with a statement so hoping it will be a lot smoother.
