Can we carry on talking about MNSN til we get a Chat Thread sorted out?

Just wanted to link to this before the other thread got full.

@hazeyjane

I don't like the idea of OTBT, there used to be a mnsn chat thread on there, and it basically ended up with 3 of us chatting (which was nice, but it would be great if others had known we were there, and then the chat could meander a bit more).

I reported my post on the other thread suggesting a chat thread, to ask MN if they would put a disappear after 30 days chat thread on the sn boards, but they haven't been back. I can see the thing about it being nice to search the archives, but I suppose I thought that because it was just a chatting thread, there might not be so many nuggets of wisdom(!), hmm I don't know.

I think the thing with the Friday thread is that sometimes it is difficult to catch up on everyones news from the week, then you feel as though you have to comment on the news, and sometimes by Friday I am only good for slumping on a sofa with a slice of pizza in my hand, and staring at shit TV (I have painted a very glamorous picture there!)

I like The Goose and Carrot Pub:ongoing chat, all welcome.

Hello hello. Sorry to be late picking up on this one.

All things being equal, we'd prefer folks to stay in MNSN, rather than decamp to OTBT.

We think your idea of an MNSN Chat topic, in which threads only lasted 60 or 90 days, is a good one. We'll just check with Tech whether that's actually possible.

HelenMumsnet · 14/03/2013 13:37

Right. It is technically possible.

Are enough folks in favour of an SN Chat topic within the Special Needs category for us to go ahead with this?

To be clear, it would have to be a separate topic.

So within the Special Needs "umbrella" category, there would be, as there is now:

Special needs: children

Parents with disabilities

Special needs support sessions

Special needs: education

Special needs: legal/financial

Special needs: recommendations

Special needs: teens and young adults

... and ...

Special needs: Chat

Yes?

@lougle

One thought, though...

On the normal talk _chat topic, if a thread gets really useful and therefore worth 'keeping' you are able to move it over to another topic.

How would it be managed if the thread was really useful, so some people wanted it moved over, but the whole point of that topic is that it disappears and some people may not have posted there if they thought it would be moved...and...and...?

Would you have to have a rule?

Yes, we could move a thread over to another topic - but only at the OP's request.

And we would then probably withdraw posts from those who didn't then want their posts remaining on the thread.

BUT if this becomes unmanageable - ie ZILLIONS of posts to withdraw every day - we may have to think again.

@PolterGoose

Helen is this a good time to ask of you can all consider a slimming down of the SN topics? SN education, recommendations and legal are all a bit tumbleweedy. Perhaps if we just had SN children, SN teens/young adults, parents with disabilities and SN chat there wouldn't be so many unanswered posts...

Yes. Slimdown def on the agenda.

But probably best to get SN Chat up and running first, we think. Or the whole thing will take for ever

@StarlightMcKenzie

Interesting question zzzzz. Is it because their Ofsted rating has to take that into consideration?

The information is probably 'out there' in the public domain through funding information and FOI requests, but I do wonder why it is made so explicit.

Know I'm butting in but I think it's one of the few stats all schools have gathered about them. They're used for funding purposes: the fewer free school meals claimed = less money for the school budget. Ditto children with SN.

HelenMumsnet · 14/03/2013 16:16

@lougle

Helen, I've said this once already today: There's no such thing as butting in here. Welcome to MNSN Grin

Why thank you!
