To all those with world book day costume worries apologies from a (formerly) smug mum

As a secondary mum I was rejoicing that I didn't have the costume agonies of primary school. However I now realise that my Ds yr11 is allowed to wear his own clothes to school from now until the end of GCSEs.
Why did anyone think that was a good idea?
Obviously not anyone with a child with ASD.

DS has to wear his uniform until they start study leave, although they swap the usual school sweatshirt for the 'leaver's hoody' in the final week. Their last day is usually non-uniform, although now the GCSE timetable has been published, it looks as though most of them will have an exam on their last day, and school insist they wear uniform for the exams!

NoHaudinMaWheest · 09/03/2013 14:43

He really wants to carry on wearing his uniform but he is just beginning to be aware of being different from everyone else so is not sure that he will.
Actually the lack of blazer pockets is the biggest problem. He won't put things in his trouser pockets for OCD reasons and doesn't have any indoor tops with pockets because tops have to be as plain as possible.

Also it is so hard to get clothes that he will wear that he has very few decent fitting non-uniform clothes.

I have been reading this with interest and a big big reality has just hit me, my son (3.5) has just been referred to paed as he has sensory issues tor walking hyperactivity an the like and has lots of 'quirks', I keep googling as hv mentioned aspergers. Anyways my son insists on wearing his school uniform every day and point blank refused to participate in world book day, I even asked him if he would like me to bring him an outfit when he saw all his friends dressed up and he did not give two hoots whether he was on his own in uniform lol. Here is me questioning whether he does have aspergers and I think I'm being a bit blind if u like, I thought he might grow out of it but is he going to do it all the way thru school?! Realllyyyy?! OMG only a simple post and its made me wake up big time!!! Anyway even though ur posts are genuine problems u encounter I love the humour that goes with it!

Would we change our dc's I'm thinking not :)

NoHaudinMaWheest · 11/03/2013 19:38

No that's the way Ds is I wouldn't change him. Not to say he doesn't drive me mad at times.

We managed to rustle up some clothes. He put things in his trouser pockets -a big deal for him. He only made the decision about what he was going to do at 7.50 this morning and the bus comes at 8.10. Fortunately we have a very patient driver.

I hope the diagnostic process goes well for you Justine. It can be a very stressful time.
