Ideas to help my ds focus in class

Hi,
My son is 5 he has a specific language impairment and dyspraxia. In school he zones out during class work. When the teacher call his name he does not respond as he has switched off. She has to physically touch him to redirect his attention. He is in a language unit and gets fantastic support. He has regular movement breaks but tends to daydream if he is not interested. What prompt or cue would you suggest. Could she ring a bell if he is not responding to his name?

Hi Gorta

I think the very first issue with children who have language issues is to make sure you get their attention before speaking. So the touch on his arm is perfect. If he is having to concentrate on listening, motor co-ordination, etc., it's no wonder he zones out - he's so little.

Hi lougle,
Thanks for your reply. I absolutely agree with you. Unfortunately she is doing class work at times during the day eg phonics and he is drifting off and he is not responding to his name and it is not always possible for her to physically touch him. She is an experienced teacher so he much be pretty challenging that she has asked my advice. I will be asking his OT as well for advice. Thanks

Can your ds be seated close to the teacher so she is able to touch him and get his attention?

Hi,
Thanks for your replies. My dd was tested for absent seizures when she was his age for similar behaviour. She was recently diagnosed with Aspergers and I will be having him tested soon. I definitely think he is. So I know it is not a medical problem.

He is seated close to the teacher there is only 7 students in the class. I will try the chewing gum. He uses a chewy tube.

It's funny at home we do so many things without thinking. I would always be looking at his face and touching him but it is easier when it's one to one.

Thanks zzzzzz

I agree that she does need to touch his arm. It is great to be able to discuss this!
