Jumping for joy - great news about DS today.

I've got some good news to share, rather than the usual coming here to moan.

It might not seem like much but I've been over the moon all day about it :o. After another really bad day for DS at his mainstream school today, I spoke to both his class teacher and HT and they've suggested moving him to the ASD base where he'll be around teachers specialising in ASD teaching him social skills etc. I think this is going to be a real turning point for DS and will really help him.

I really couldn't be happier about it!

Has anyone else's dc done similar? How did they find the change?

Do you mean he has a place and the paperwork ( statement etc) is all sorted, or can he be taught in the base without all that. Its great news if all the hurdles are crossed.

He doesn't have a statement, and paperwork wasn't discussed (tbh I hadn't even thought about that until you mentioned it Blush), the head teacher said she just needed my permission and he could move there for 2 days a week.

The base is already in school if that's what has made the difference?

Might be worth thinking about applying for a statement, that way his place is guaranteed.

My DS2 attends an ASD unit and has a statement, doing very well in comparison to how he was in mainstream. Sounds very positive but please think about applying for statutory assessment, that way he is going to be full time in base and benefit fully.

School sounds supportive but get it in writing I think. :)

That's wonderful news Smile

You might want to pin down the HT as to what might happen if another child who is statemented needs a place in the base...will your DS be moved out to accommodate? If so, then you need to think about getting a papertrail.

Having said that, the best evidence would be progress in the base, so depending on how you feel, you might want to just let him be for a little bit, so that they get some evidence that he does better there.

Thanks for the advice Smile. I think I'll keep him there for a month then use the progress that he'll (hopefully) have shown to get a statement sorted out.

Yes the school are just great, after a year in a school who were just appalling and dealt with problems from dc with SN with physical restraints and illegal exclusions it's wonderful to know my son is now in a school where he is valued and his needs are properly taken into consideration.
