SALT report, what I can do to help DS?

Had a speech and language report land through my door on Tuesday, DS2 9, autism attends an ASD learning support centre.

School hadn't told me report was being done, they are great but everything is always 'great, doing well' in home school book but obviously DS does have a lot of difficulty and want some advise on what I can be doing that may really help him, any experience?

TALC - subtest concepts and following directions

Raw score 41. Scaled score 5 5th percentile.

CELF 4

Expressive language skills
Subtest

Recalling sentences raw score 39

Scaled score 4. 2nd percentile.

Formulating sentences

Raw score 18. Scaled score 1. 0.1st percentile.

Thanks

Bump. I suppose what I really am asking is there are specific speech & Lang programmes, therapies that may be helpful to DS.

Am waiting for the SALT to ring me so I get a bit more of an idea where she feels DS is at and what I can do to help progress. But know you lot have loads of SALT experience.

bumping for you starfish. I'm not a SaLT and it sounds as if you need one to explain what the scores mean.

Thanks porridge :)

Did they only do these subtests?

starfish71 · 08/03/2013 08:12

She tested his receptive Lang skills using TALC - it says DS achieved competency at all 4 levels of the assessment.

Then it just lists the subtest - concepts & following directions and
Expressive Lang skills recalling sentences and formulated sentences.

It states that 'difficulties were noted in the TALC assessment with DS's ability to identify emotions and why the characters may be displaying particular emotions. DS was observed to become quite upset in class as a result of an incident on the playground, he had difficulty explaining why he was upset to staff and discussing his own emotions of others'.

His statement states a programme of activities reviewed twice yearly, I am feeling that DS needs a lot more but know speech therapy is very limited in our area.

Any help, advice please?

TALC and CELF-IV

porridgeLover · 08/03/2013 21:30

Star, are you in a position to telephone the SaLT and ask them to give you the results in plain English?
The description of the TALC in Mareeya's link says it can be used to set SMART goals, so I would have thought that those could be added to his programme?

Thanks mareey and porridge. Am still trying to get hold of therapist.

Am worrying as school have been great but IEP's get sent home without any input from me and then this report turns up and to be honest I can gather DS is not doing too well but don't know actually what it means or how I can help him improve.

Well thats a bit poo isn't it.
Why are the school not looking for your input to the IEP, I would have thought that was fairly basic good practice?

And a report turning up out of the blue? why are you not in the loop so that you 'can maintain continuity of his programme at home'?
